The ventilated façades are a building solution that is becoming more and more extended thanks to its high quality and aesthetical characteristics. It presents several advantages as for example thermal insulation and noise reduction.

The use of a second skin façade creates a protection against atmospheric agents, as the wind, the sun, the rain, the snow, etc. This results in less wear on the façade and lower maintenance costs.

Vives Azulejos y Gres presents as suitable for ventilated façades its big size porcelain ranges in 45×90, 60×90 and 60×120.

A ventilated façade is a wall covering system that incorporates a ventilated cavity between the covering and the insulation. It is considered the most efficient system for insulating buildings as it eliminates unwanted heat bridges and condensation problems, resulting in excellent thermal-hygrometric behaviour.

Components of the system:

- Vertical profile attached to the support by cantilever fastenings.
- Mechanical holding clips.
- Wall panels.

In order to offer solutions for ventilated façades, Vives Azulejos y Gres works in collaboration with Mecanofas, which is a company that has been dedicated to the commercialisation and assembly of ventilated façades for more than ten years. The manager of this company is Carlos Sanchís, the real pioneer in the introduction of the ventilated façades and the main responsible in the Karrat S-7 fastening system promotion. Carlos has also been awarded with the Alfa de Oro, which is a prize presented in the most important fair in the ceramic sector: Cevisama.

Ceramics has become one of the main options when creating a second skin façade. It provides the building with a sophisticated and elegant image contributing to create more elegant and distinguished urban spaces.

Vives Azulejos y Gres ranges include some series, which, thanks to its size and resistance to bad weather conditions, are suitable for this type of use. Some of the most suitable sizes are: 45 x 90, 60 x 90 and 60 x 120.

In size 45×90 we can find series as KENION, y CARONTE. Both of them are elegant and frost resistant porcelain tiles.

On the other hand, we have the porcelain series HIDRA y LOIRE. HIDRA and LOIRE in size 60×90. HIDRA series has a high PEI so this is a very resistant tile front abrasion and erosion, as well as frost and slip resistant. LOIRE series presents a look that simulates the stone looking. Finally, the CONDOR series in 60×120 is a frost resistant and rectified porcelain tile with an elegant finish.

VIVES – Is becoming more common the use of ceramic in ventilated façades?

Carlos Sanchís – After several years of effort, nowadays the ceramic ventilated façades have been consolidated.

VIVES – Are the advantages of using this material in ventilated façades well known?

C.S. – There are some independent works by companies from this sector that have made a comparison between ceramic as floor tile and other alternative materials such as marble, limestone, granite, etc. In façades the range is wider, including materials as prefabricated concrete, plywood sheets, aluminium panels, etc. Moreover, there are needed essays to check the resistance front atmospheric factors and ultraviolet rays.

VIVES – Which system or ceramic size would you use considering safety, economy, etc.?

C.S. – The most suitable size for the visible or hidden clip system is the 45×90. The 60×120 and the 60×90 are the most recommended for the back fastening system, even though a horizontal substructure is needed.

VIVES – How does the ventilated façade system contribute to a sustainable construction of both new and renovated buildings?

C.S. – In general, ventilated façades provide the building with an excellent resistance front humidity and temperature, independently of the used material. Moreover, the ceramic ventilated façades, thanks to its lightness, allows the renovation of existing buildings, giving them a modern and durable looking.

VIVES – Which innovations can be presented in a ceramic ventilated façade construction?

C.S. – The innovations in ventilated façades take two clearly defined ways. The first of them is the research and development of chemical fastening system, considering that nowadays the ceramic tiles are becoming thinner which makes difficult the use of a mechanical fastening system. On the other hand, the second line is based in the additional characteristics such as the photovoltaic integration, protection against electromagnetic waves, etc.

VIVES – Which are the main characteristics of your ventilated façades system?

C.S. – Our fastening systems are basically characterised by their safety and fast installation, as well as the wide range of systems that we offer, which are adaptable to different tile sizes and thickness in order to optimize costs.

VIVES – Which are the stages to follow in a ventilated façade project?

C.S. – Basically the redesigning, the installation of cantilever fastenings and fastening edges, the vertical profiles installation, the isolation, the installation of horizontal profiles, if they are needed, and finally, the collocation of the porcelain tile.

VIVES – Which determining factors do we have to consider in a ventilated façade performance?

C.S. – Usually, the ventilated façades are only tested front wind conditions, event though the ventilated façade is also subjected to horizontal efforts, due to the wind, and to vertical efforts, due to its own weight. Regarding buildings, we have to add three factors: to study the state of the supports where we will fix the cantilever fastenings; to verify the overweight that is going to be added to the building, in the case of renovations; and finally, to confirm the forged edges setback. These forged edges project around 10 cm. from the façade. If the building does not have these setbacks, the forged edges will project more than the legal limits.

VIVES – How does DIT contribute to the collocation of a ventilated façade system?

Basically, safety. There are two kind of organisms that certify its proficiency in a building system, these are Instituto de Construcción Eduardo Torroja and Instituto de Tecnología de Cataluña (ITEC). The first of them certifies by way of the DIT: Technical Suitability Document, and the second through the DAU: Use Adequacy Document. Obtaining these documents is voluntary and what it is described on them is that the system itself will fulfil properly the requirements if it is applied according to the document. The lack of normative in this field is the reason why these documents exist. In case there was a normative, we should apply it and these documents would not have any validity.

During my relentless research to discover the best, the most unique and most interesting tile related subjects I have admittedly stumbled on a recurring story.  So I thought to my self this must be worth sharing on this site as this is our forte.  The world of tiles and the wider scope of the arts are merging into one.  Now amazingly, we can include bizzarre poetry with the possibility of hidden clues? Maybe not poetry but some sort of work of warped literature…does anyone know? Please if you have any ideas i am definitely keen to hear…as many others are, including this blogger….

Unless you’re hunting for them, the weird markers embedded in downtown streets in St. Louis don’t draw much attention.
For those who do notice, the words make little sense.

The shoe box-sized marker read: “TOyNBEE IDEA IN KUbricK’s 2001 RESURRECT DEAD ON PLANET JUPiTER.”

The plaques, numbering more than 100 and found on dozens of city streets across the United States and in three South American countries, present a riddle that may never be solved: What in the world – or on Jupiter, for that matter – does English historian Arnold J. Toynbee have to do with filmmaker Stanley Kubrick and with raising the dead?

St. Louis has three of the “Toynbee plaques,” or “tiles,” as they are often called. Kansas City has one. Some have called the markers the urban equivalent of crop circles. Others say they’re just quirky underground graffiti, some done by copycats.

No one has ever been caught or taken credit for this caper that dates back to at least the 1980s.
A Web site, www.toynbee.net, one of the best sources of information on the tiles, is dedicated to mapping and discussing the phenomenon.

Chris Clark went to the site after she stumbled across the plaques in the 1990s in St. Louis.
“The pleasure of these plaques is not so much in the solution and ‘whodunit,”’ Clark said. “It’s hearing the wild theories and stories that surround them.” Some have tried to make the connection to Kubrick and his sci-fi classic “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Internet searches return a load of theories, but the connection with the late filmmaker is vague, at best. “The meaning of the message on the tiles is pretty open-ended,” said Justin Duerr, a Toynbee tile fanatic. “You can draw a lot of connections between the two, depending on how far out you want to stretch it.”

Another variation reads: “TOyNBEE IDEA IN MOViE 2001 RESURRECT DEAD ON PLANET JUPiTER.” Sometimes, there are other cryptic messages as well. Duerr lives in Philadelphia, the place where many people believe the strange practice of stamping the message on city streets began. A plaque in Santiago, Chile, lists an “A. Toynbee” and a Philadelphia address, but the address – while real – provided no solution.
In 1983, an article in The Philadelphia Inquirer told of a man named James Morasco who said Toynbee’s theory of bringing dead molecules back to life on Jupiter appeared in Kubrick’s 1968 film. Many have argued that no such reference exists, but Jupiter is part of the movie.
Toynbee was best known for his writings on the rise and fall of civilizations.

In the late 1990s, Duerr became obsessed with the idea and the plaques that appear to be melted into the streets like crayons on a hot day. Last year he developed the Web site www.resurrectdead.com to document the tiles, and he says he plans to make a movie on the subject. Duerr said even after Morasco’s death in 2003, new plaques appeared in Philadelphia and elsewhere.

At one time, Duerr said, the tiles could be found every other block. Many have since been paved over or worn down to nothing by traffic. Many of the plaques look identical, as if made with a cookie cutter. Others change the wording slightly and take on a colorful style of their own. Some include political messages.

One Web site reported a Toynbee tile in Pittsburgh that offered instructions on how to make the plaques using several layers of linoleum and glue. Another tile reads, “You must make and glue tiles!” That was enough to persuade Duerr to make a tile of his own and slap it to a street in Philadelphia. He said his version looks almost like the others. His actions present the most obvious explanation: Other people were intrigued enough by their encounter with the tiles to make their own in various cities. Duerr said there’s even a name for such behavior: A meme, pronounced “meem,” meaning a cultural action that is transmitted and repeated over and over.
“I don’t believe there’s a lone gunman,” Duerr said. “I like to look at it as art that exists for a reason other than being in an art gallery.”

The first known Portuguese examples of the use of AZULEJOS as a monumental wall-covering employed Hispano-Moorish tiles which were imported from Seville in around 1503.

One of the lasting consequences of the Arab presence in the Iberian Peninsula was the continued practise of tile making. Seville was the great centre of the tile industry, which continued to employ the archaic “cuerda seca” and “cuenca” techniques until the mid XVI century.

The motifs on the tiles evolved from geometric Moorish lace-like and looping designs into European plant and animal themes which gradually progressed from the Gothic to the pure Renaissance style.

Nevertheless, quite apart from the motifs themselves, Portugal retained a Moorish taste for excess in the practise of completely covering surfaces with decorations – a kind of rejection of emptiness.

ALBARRADA – An urn, basket, vase or jar of flowers, sometimes flanked by birds, child figures or dolphins. Used as a free-standing decorative motif in the 17th century, it was commonly used in the 18th century in repetitive modules, sometimes separated by plant or architectural motifs to create facings with a strong decorative effect.

The second quarter of the XVIII century witnessed an unprecedented increase in the manufacture of Portuguese tiles, partly due to large orders from Brazil.

This was the period of the so-called “Great Production”, which overlapped the reign of King Dom João V (1706-1750) and saw the execution of the largest cycles of historical panels ever employed in Portugal.

This increase in output led to the repetition of the same conformations, the use of ordered motifs like “albarradas” (vases of flowers) and the simplification of the painting of the scenes themselves. The surrounding frames also took on a major scenographic importance.

The continuation of the “Cycle of the Masters” can be seen in the quality of the work of a number of later painters such as Nicolau de Freitas, Teotónio dos Santos and Valentim de Almeida.

Alongside the religious themes ordered by the Church, the tiles used to decorate palaces began to employ more bucolic, mythological, hunting and war-like scenes, as well as those taken from daily life at court. This was particularly obvious in the so-called “welcoming figures” placed in the entrances to buildings.

The following observations are only suggestions on what can be done with our glass tiles. This is not a comprehensive list and is offered in the spirit of making full-colored, custom-decorated, glass tiles and glass murals and their use, less of a mystery.

We hope that they will provide some ideas for your projects. We welcome any suggestions and additions to this list so that other visitors will also find assistance with their full-color, custom-decorated, glass tiles and glass mural projects.

Kitchen Back Splashes

Our glass tiles can be used as Kitchen Back Splashes in a very new and exciting way:

* Since all our glass tiles are decorated in the back, the full-color decoration is completely protected from any mechanical surface abrasion and the glass tiles can very easily be cleaned without affecting the decoration.
* Our glass tiles have either a white or a frosted (translucent) backing and come in these three sizes: 4-¼” x 4-¼”, 6″ x 6″, or 6″ x 8″. This offers a great selection of sizes not only of individual tiles but also permits for very comprehensive and elaborate layouts of kitchen back splashes and entire wall murals. The frosted tile backing permits the creation of a translucent appearance of the entire tile decoration.
* Our glass tiles can be “glued” together either along their edges or their back by using such adhesives as transparent silicone or transparent glues like liquid nails.
* A kitchen back splash created with our glass tiles, for example, does not only reflect natural light but can also be lit not only from the front but also from the sides, or back of the glass tiles. If done right, lit glass tiles will produce a great visual effect that will enhance any environment so decorated.
* The glass tiles can be mounted directly to an appropriately prepared wall or mounted on a removable unit/panel for installation as one piece (for multi-tile and mural decorations).
* Our tiles can be mounted over regular glass building blocks (exterior walls) to be lit by natural outside sun light from “behind”
* You could also mount our glass tiles onto a reflective foil so as to maximize the light diffusion from your source of light. Or use Plexiglas or acrylic sheets if transparency is desired.
* For lighting the back splash, you might want to consider these light sources:
- low volt/watt rope light;
- fiber optics;
- LED strips; and, of course
- natural sun light.
* A sample mock-up should permit you to experiment with the many possibilities our full-color, custom-decorated glass tiles offer to arrive at a custom kitchen back splash that will create “Ahs” and “Ohs” from any onlooker.

So you?re off and tiling your new kitchen backsplash and you come to the last row of tile when you find that a whole tile is just too big. What to do? Two ways to fix this problem, many stainless steel tile manufacturers provide custom pre-cut tiles that you can order with your full size tiles. Pre-cut tiles are more expensive because the buyer will have to pay for each cut, about a dollar and a half, on top of the cost of the stainless tile. Option two is to buy your own metal tile saw. For about one hundred dollars you can buy a small band saw and outfit it with a metal saw blade designed for cutting tile. A 100 tooth count blade works well. With the ability to cut your stainless tile as you install, the guess work on how many pre-cut tiles you need will be eliminated.

When I was asked to write a history of ceramic tile in the United States I took a long time thinking about how to approach the subject. Ceramic tile has a long history. Probably no one knows the actual beginning but tile has been around for a very long time. I remember how impressed I was with the tile still in good condition in the ruins of ancient Rome. The tile in Pompeii is still in excellent shape after 2000 years, although it was buried in volcanic ash for much of this time.

Recently a kiln was unearthed in Centamura del Chianti, near Siena, Italy from the 3rd century b.c.e. Broken pieces of ceramics were found in the ruins of the kiln. These were surmised to have been offered to the god of the kiln to bless the outcome of future firings. Making ceramics was a hazardous and speculative business in those days. But this article is about the more recent past where the outcome of the firings is much more predictable.

North American tile making had its roots in Europe where tile had been manufactured for years. Tile artisans brought this craft with them in the 1800′s and set up tile making factories all over the country. Tile was largely made by “batch firing” the tile in some form of stationery kiln, such as a beehive shaped brick kiln. The tiles were placed into the kiln and heated or baked until some transformation of the mineral particles occurred. This would cause the body to solidify and, if glazed, for the glaze to melt and fuse to the body of the tile. The process could take 24 hours or more for this single firing.

In the pre-World War II era, much of the tile was made in this batch fashion. The tile body material was fed into a press usually by hand, then dried, glazed and baked in a batch kiln. Loading and unloading kilns was a major labor-consuming item. Finishing was laborious as well and could involve hand painting tiles, silk screening, inserting different colored glazes and other forms of decoration. If a multi-colored tile was to be produced multiple firings would be required. Thus the tile would have to be hand-loaded in and out of the kiln and heated for many cycles before it was completed. This could take many days for completion of a production run. The amount of labor was very high.

The firing temperature in these batch kilns could vary quite a lot from one area of the kiln to another resulting in size and color variations as well as a high scrap rate. Thus the yield of a given run could be quite low.

One major improvement from these early method was the development of the tunnel kiln, a long structure that had moving transport devices conveying tile through continuously. The tiles ready for firing were loaded onto carts with support devices called “kiln furniture” and the carts pushed through the kiln by some means including human-power. It took a strong back to push kiln carts through a 200-foot or longer kiln. Other innovations in the early 1900′s included the use of conveyor belts to transport the tile from the press to the finishing department and into the kiln and mechanical presses to take the human muscle out of the process.

But the industry didn’t stop there and is still innovating. In the 1960′s early experimenting with a device called a “roller-hearth” kiln began. The device consisted of a series of ceramic rollers that were gear-driven and would transport a single layer of tiles through the firing zone of a kiln. This method had several advantages. Each tile was exposed to a very similar firing condition making the tiles more uniform. Also the firing time was reduced to less than 45 minutes and finally, the tiles could be automatically fed into and out of the kiln.

By the early 1980′s roller-hearth kilns were being installed in the United States. This was a sea change for our industry. Other innovations from this period included hydraulic presses that could generate very high pressure allowing for larger-sized tiles, greater body uniformity, and more output per stroke of the press.

The output of the earliest production roller-hearth kilns was about 6-7 million square feet per year. Today there are large kilns that will make 30 million square feet per year with the same number of workers. The process that is used for most tile production today is known as the pressed-dust method. It involves grinding the mineral constituents of the tile body in water slurry. The tile body is made up of a mixture of various mineral components depending on the desired properties of the finished tile, such as feldspar, ball-clay, talc, shale, etc. ground to a various particle sizes.

This slurry, which contains about 50% water is then spray-dried to a damp powder and stored to season it. From storage the powder is fed to the large presses, some exerting up to 7 tons of pressure, where it is pressed into the shape of the tile body. The next step is to convey the tiles into a drier to reduce the water content to about 2% and then to the glazing line (some tiles are not glazed) where a plethora of devices may be used to create the desired look. Some devices include sprayers, silk-screening devices, dry-glaze dispersers, waterfalls, rollers, texture imprinters etc.

From the glaze line the tiles enter the kiln where they may be fired once (monocottura) or several times if required by a specific design, Then the tiles are transported directly to an inspection area where a visual and/or electronic inspection of every tile occurs. The latest technology provides for complete computer testing for size, shape, flatness, and finish. Tiles are automatically sorted to a tolerance of ½ millimeter size and placed into appropriate caliber stacks and then put into marked cartons. Most of these steps take place with no human intervention in the latest technology driven factory.

At the end of the line, a robot places the cartons of tile on a pallet for movement into the warehouse. This is not to say that there are no workers in the plant. With all this high tech equipment the factory needs a highly trained and capable maintenance department. Unfortunately most plants have to contend with kiln fires, broken rollers, and other mishaps. Since the process is continuous for 24 hours a day 7 days a week, the crews must be ready at all times. Changeovers are required for the various colors, sizes of tiles, and textures. Ceramic engineers and technicians must be on hand to develop formulations and techniques for the different designs. The production managers would love to run all off-white 12X12 inch tiles all the time but today’s educated consumer wants variety.

Interestingly enough, despite all this technology there are still tile producers making hand-painted and formed tile that is batch-fired in the old way (except they are using small electric kilns instead of the old brick beehives). The Tile Council of North America has about 50 art tile makers using some of the techniques of yesteryear mentioned above.

What does this mean for the consumer? For one thing the reduction in labor has made ceramic tile very affordable. The price has never been lower in the current period. Tile is available in many sizes, designs, styles, textures, and colors thus freeing the designer to create a given look. Modern techniques permit the manufacturer to make tile that emulates natural products such as marble, limestone, granite, slate, etc. Tile that matches older styles is available for the period look. The properties of tile such as strength, shape, size tolerance, slip-resistance, color, shading, are much more uniform and predictable. New equipment can make individual tile that are 2X4 feet or larger.

SHANGHAI EXPO 2010

The next world Expo will be held from 1st May till 31st October in Shanghai and the theme will be “”Better city, better life”.
The city will be the ideal stage where to compare different development experiences and new approaches to the human habitat, in order to promote the sustainable development.
An event that counts on the participation of over 200 countries and International organizations with an average of 70 million visitors foreseen over the course of the exhibition.
Fiandre will be present into the Italian Pavilion, designed by arch. Giampaolo Imbrighi: a 7000sqm surface, 18 mt high with several figures in different rotating sizes that should be interpreted as a sort of mosaic where the building modules express a metaphor for the Italian traditional pluralism and regional customs.
The Italian Pavilion presents products and materials showing the ability of innovation, the dynamism of the Italian companies, the acquired experiences in the improvement of the cities’ quality and, last but not least, the country’s excellence, in one word: the “Made in Italy”.

Fiandre decided to accept this challenge and to offer its innovative, technologically advanced and aesthetically high products, to represent not only the brand, but the whole ceramic sector.
Fiandre is then very close to the topics that will be discussed during the Expo: the urban development in the respect of the environment is an aim that the company is contending far back, investing in the research of materials with the minimum environmental impact> and offering advanced solutions, capable to face the global energy consumption.
The Organization Board decision of including the company among the partners for the Italian Pavilion has to be read as a further proof of the prestige and the quality of Fiandre made in Italy: its large products range allows once again the participation of the company to a worldwide event, follow up of a philosophy that is a winning stimulus and a confirmation of the values that Fiandre during the years is communicating to the architecture and project world.

After Beijing’s Olympics, the Chinese authorities’ ambition is to marvel again the world, organizing the biggest exposition ever, that will bring to the city of Shanghai the attention of the whole world, consecrating it as big international capital.
It’s the first Universal Exposition that will have as main theme the city in relation to the quality life, one of the most discussed topics on the future of our planet. The 2010 Shanghai Expo will be inaugurated the 1st May 2010 and will remain open till the 31st October, for 6 months and, according to the most recente stimate, the foreseen flow… is about 80 million visitors, with an average of 600 persons per day. The official theme of the event is “Better city, Better life”, that can be reinterpreted consenting the involvement of numerous sectors. Italy will be present with its National Pavilion that belongs to the restricted circle of the biggest pavilions (over 6000 square mt) that will be realized only by 12 countries. For the occasion, the Governement has created by the Foreign Office a specific structure, the Government Commission for the 2010 Shanghai Worldwide Exposition, guided by the General Commissioner, Prof. Beniamino Quintieri.  »

In order to offer solutions for ventilated façades, Vives Azulejos y Gres works in collaboration with Mecanofas, which is a company that has been dedicated to the commercialisation and assembly of ventilated façades for more than ten years. The manager of this company is Carlos Sanchís, the real pioneer in the introduction of the ventilated façades and the main responsible in the Karrat S-7 fastening system promotion. Carlos has also been awarded with the Alfa de Oro, which is a prize presented in the most important fair in the ceramic sector: Cevisama.

Ceramics has become one of the main options when creating a second skin façade. It provides the building with a sophisticated and elegant image contributing to create more elegant and distinguished urban spaces.

Vives Azulejos y Gres ranges include some series, which, thanks to its size and resistance to bad weather conditions, are suitable for this type of use. Some of the most suitable sizes are: 45 x 90, 60 x 90 and 60 x 120.

In size 45×90 we can find series as KENION, y CARONTE. Both of them are elegant and frost resistant porcelain tiles.

On the other hand, we have the porcelain series HIDRA y LOIRE. HIDRA and LOIRE in size 60×90. HIDRA series has a high PEI so this is a very resistant tile front abrasion and erosion, as well as frost and slip resistant. LOIRE series presents a look that simulates the stone looking. Finally, the CONDOR series in 60×120 is a frost resistant and rectified porcelain tile with an elegant finish.

VIVES – Is becoming more common the use of ceramic in ventilated façades?

Carlos Sanchís – After several years of effort, nowadays the ceramic ventilated façades have been consolidated.

VIVES – Are the advantages of using this material in ventilated façades well known?

C.S. – There are some independent works by companies from this sector that have made a comparison between ceramic as floor tile and other alternative materials such as marble, limestone, granite, etc. In façades the range is wider, including materials as prefabricated concrete, plywood sheets, aluminium panels, etc. Moreover, there are needed essays to check the resistance front atmospheric factors and ultraviolet rays.

VIVES – Which system or ceramic size would you use considering safety, economy, etc.?

C.S. – The most suitable size for the visible or hidden clip system is the 45×90. The 60×120 and the 60×90 are the most recommended for the back fastening system, even though a horizontal substructure is needed.

VIVES – How does the ventilated façade system contribute to a sustainable construction of both new and renovated buildings?

C.S. – In general, ventilated façades provide the building with an excellent resistance front humidity and temperature, independently of the used material. Moreover, the ceramic ventilated façades, thanks to its lightness, allows the renovation of existing buildings, giving them a modern and durable looking.

VIVES – Which innovations can be presented in a ceramic ventilated façade construction?

C.S. – The innovations in ventilated façades take two clearly defined ways. The first of them is the research and development of chemical fastening system, considering that nowadays the ceramic tiles are becoming thinner which makes difficult the use of a mechanical fastening system. On the other hand, the second line is based in the additional characteristics such as the photovoltaic integration, protection against electromagnetic waves, etc.

VIVES – Which are the main characteristics of your ventilated façades system?

C.S. – Our fastening systems are basically characterised by their safety and fast installation, as well as the wide range of systems that we offer, which are adaptable to different tile sizes and thickness in order to optimize costs.

VIVES – Which are the stages to follow in a ventilated façade project?

C.S. – Basically the redesigning, the installation of cantilever fastenings and fastening edges, the vertical profiles installation, the isolation, the installation of horizontal profiles, if they are needed, and finally, the collocation of the porcelain tile.

VIVES – Which determining factors do we have to consider in a ventilated façade performance?

C.S. – Usually, the ventilated façades are only tested front wind conditions, event though the ventilated façade is also subjected to horizontal efforts, due to the wind, and to vertical efforts, due to its own weight. Regarding buildings, we have to add three factors: to study the state of the supports where we will fix the cantilever fastenings; to verify the overweight that is going to be added to the building, in the case of renovations; and finally, to confirm the forged edges setback. These forged edges project around 10 cm. from the façade. If the building does not have these setbacks, the forged edges will project more than the legal limits.

VIVES – How does DIT contribute to the collocation of a ventilated façade system?

Basically, safety. There are two kind of organisms that certify its proficiency in a building system, these are Instituto de Construcción Eduardo Torroja and Instituto de Tecnología de Cataluña (ITEC). The first of them certifies by way of the DIT: Technical Suitability Document, and the second through the DAU: Use Adequacy Document. Obtaining these documents is voluntary and what it is described on them is that the system itself will fulfil properly the requirements if it is applied according to the document. The lack of normative in this field is the reason why these documents exist.
