In 1967 TAULELL S.L. was born and so the great ceramic Project TAU began.

The province of Castellón is well-known for the quality of its clays and the ceramic tradition among its inhabitants. Historically, in this area the terracotta culture and the glaze pottery crafts have coexisted. In 1967, with all these traditional handicrafts as best teacher, Taulell S.A. started its activity in the outskirts of Castellón de la Plana, the capital city of the area.

Taulell was constituted as an Association of Companies during the 60s, an important decade for being halfway point of the last century and the time when our civilization acquired the techniques to achieve targets as impossible as the conquest of space.

The founding members were entrepreneurs from five companies with strong ties in the world of ceramics and a professional management team. The objective was to obtain ceramic biscuit necessary for the twice-fired production process, what used to be a prevailing method to produce glazed tiles. The company was born to be innovative and it used the first tunnel kilns to substitute the traditional Arab kiln.

The industrial development favoured high production figures of ceramic biscuit and it became Europe’s top producer.

In the 80s technological changes took place in ceramics worldwide; single-firing came up. Taulell’s shareholding turned into a limited liability Company run still nowadays by three important families with significant careers on the ceramics trade.

The company started to manufacture the final product, although biscuit ceramic national and international demands have been never left unattended.

In 1984 a new plant was built to produce single-fired stoneware flooring and our first big brand for glazed ceramic products arose with the name TAUGRES.

Ceramic coating was our next industrial challenge and our company opted for being in the vanguard with the single porous firing method. The factory started in 1988 and from that moment on we offered a complete supply of ceramic products, flooring and coating.

The growing process continued and our Porcelain Tiles arrived in 1994. The Company made a big investment and created the most technologically advanced plant in Spain. The decision was clear; our production had to incorporate a material that was bound to become a landmark in the history of ceramics.

We needed a logo-brand to cover all our products and Taugres turned into Tau Ceramic and therefore we opened a new and definitive stage in the definition of our trade-name and increased our production capacity, market and products.

Tau entered the 21st century with a powerful brand, a great workforce, cutting-edge facilities, global commercial networks and a highly innovative product.

TAU and Porcelanatto ceramics will have a special role to play in ‘Bon Dia, Bonica’, the major new TVV drama series which is due to go on air in September. Once again, ceramic coverings from the two well-known brands will be showing off their ability to create spaces; indeed they act as a kind of “mirror” in which their inhabitants’ personalities – and even their emotions and aspirations in life – are reflected. This leading role played by ceramics is also fully recognised in TAU’s work alongside Pedro Almodóvar for his Oscar-winning film “Todo Sobre Mi Madre” (All About My Mother).

Now TAU and Porcelanatto are taking things a step further. The new soap, produced by TVV in partnership with FicciON TV and Mat Media, will air in the early afternoon slot from Mondays to Fridays and, during its 16-week run, it will tell the story of a busy woman who is head of an advertising agency in Madrid but who, as a result of her father’s disappearance, finds herself forced to take over the family business running a market stall in an imaginary district of Valencia.

The people in charge of the set design for this carefully-presented new television programme are the set designer Cristina Mampaso and the decorator and designer Alejandro Sáez de la Torre, both well-known professionals, and they paid very special attention to ceramic coverings so that the various formats, colours, designs and textures make each of the characters’ different living spaces stand out. Even with the choice of the TAU and Porcelanatto designs and products they were able to identify with the various characters socially and emotionally, thus providing viewers with some very valuable subliminal information.

So “Bon Dia, Bonica” shows off a whole range of ceramic designs, from the more traditional kind displayed in the central market all the way through to some of the fresher, more innovative, even mould-breaking ideas produced exclusively for Porcelanatto by Karim Rashid, one of the most influential names in modern design. To be precise, the models designed by Rashid have been chosen to cover floors and walls in the places frequented by the younger characters. In this case, the products from the NO-Stalgia collection reflect light, strength, dynamism and their users’ aspirations. The models’ sinuous geometric shapes, which create ever-changing optical effects, together with an unusual palette of colours, help to put across key moments in the lives of a group of people who are always ready to face any challenge and any experience, although they always remain totally true to themselves.

It is also well worth highlighting the role played by ceramics at advertising agency portrayed in the series. In this case, the Galileo collection reigns supreme; this is a very cutting edge TAU product and is unusual in that it is inspired by abstract art. Galileo fits the setting like a glove and, as a result of its thousand and one variations on the lines which both make up and break up the design, it puts across ideas such as originality, balance, change, modernity, the ability to surprise… all factors found in the day-to-day work of a promotional agency.

Even so, there will be a very wide range of models by TAU and Porcelanatto on display in the “Bon Dia, Bonica” series, showing the kinds of feel that ceramics can offer from an architectural, decorative and interior design point of view.

-Mecalux is designing an expansion of a TAU plant’s logistics system to meet its growing needs, thus stepping up the picking of orders for the European area which accounts for more than 70% of its total turnover.

-The robotics system and EasyWMS® warehouse management software installed by Mecalux will allow TAU Cerámica to consolidate its loads as 92% of lorries will be able to leave from the same centre in Castellón.

Expansion on the go.
The expansion has been designed especially for picking from pallets and once it is complete, the pallet capacity will rise from roughly 4,200 to approximately 7000, and the system will then have 4 totally automatic picking stations, aided by a pneumatic gripper used to support and hold the materials, which is important with something as heavy and delicate as ceramics. The warehouse, which measures around 4,500 m2, will go from 3 to 5 transelevators and from 3 to 5 corridors. The expansion will take place whilst the existing system continues to operate, which means that, given the exceptional conditions under which it will be assembled, the estimated delivery time is between 10 and 12 months so that it does not interfere with its usual operations.

TAU and Porcelanatto are all about fashion, but they are also IN fashion; so Casa Decor Madrid 2010, the key event for architecture, decoration and interior design, which is being held in the Spanish capital from 20th May to 20th June, will have as many as four areas put together using materials from the two Tau Group brands. This result shows the unprecedented welcome given to the company’s ideas from industry professionals, who have the job of choosing the materials offering the best performances and features when it comes to putting across their designs and ideas in the finest living spaces.

On this occasion, the chosen venue is the large building at Calle Velázquez, 29, right at the heart of the exclusive Salamanca district of Madrid. To mark the eighteenth anniversary of the event, and just as Casa Decor has become the major European forum for exchanging ideas, showcasing new products and a platform for creativity, the professionals who have been asked to put together this year’s show have decided that TAU and Porcelanatto products should be used in as many as four parts of the home. Actually – and this proves just how versatile they are – they will be used both indoors and outdoors, showing that ceramics are the ideal material for all kinds of solution, even if it is very complex or completely new.

To go into more detail, Casa Decor Madrid will use pieces from the TAUfine version of the Corten Night range to cover one of the arches over the alcoves in the main entrance . This means that ceramics are becoming one of the most innovative materials not merely from an aesthetic angle but also from the architectural point of view, because they can make a real contribution to the energy efficiency and sustainability of buildings. The choice of this material, with its characteristic dark metallic finish, offers an incredibly attractive result, as it combines perfectly with the tone of the works which the well-known sculptor Víctor Ochoa will be installing in the public entrance to Casa Decor Madrid. The result will be a synthesis of components aiming to amalgamate and boost art in all of its expressive forms, whether in the volumes of a sculpture or in the perfect planimetry of a tile on a façade.
Once we get inside, we find three spaces which have arisen out of the creative experience of TAU and Porcelanatto. The result achieved in the home’s main bathroom is spectacular. It was designed by Guillermo García Hoz and this has become the first room exclusively using designs by Karim Rashid, the enfant terrible of design and international fashion who has won awards all over the world for his bold approach and ability to innovate. This area has been put together using the Poetic and Emotion Carbon models, both of which belong to the NO-Stalgia collection which the designer has developed for Porcelanatto, the TAU Group’s brand specialising in contract projects.

The result is something that combines the shock of the new with a hypnotic, constantly-changing effect produced by the symmetries of the pieces’ lines. Together with colour, this is certainly one of the most identifiable traits of Karim Rashid’s work. So Casa Decor Madrid will see a global first, as the Karim world enters the field of ceramic materials, an unmissable event for all trend-spotters.

Another key space at Casa Decor – and a meeting point for professionals visiting the show – is the cafe-bar, using a fusion of TAU and Porcelanatto products which only a few decorators such as Pepe Martín Puerto + Studio Artbe are capable of pulling off. What strikes you most about the room is the futuristic effect produced by TAU’s Corten B model at the entrance and on the floor of the bar, which combines perfectly with the motifs used by the design of the Desire series, from the NO-Stalgia collection, by Karim Rashid, used to cover the dining room. This is all about designer ceramics for people who want to stamp their own personalities on their homes. On this occasion, the designers Pepe Martin and Juan Artaza have plumped for the minimalism and restraint of the Jet model from the Desire series, whose depth and magnetism are only broken up by the ends of the lines.

The final space at Casa Decor which has the TAU stamp on it is in the toilets of the aforementioned cafe-bar. Of course, toilets are one space where ceramics traditionally reign supreme for hygiene reasons and because they are so easy to clean, although this does not mean that there is any need to compromise on quality and up-to-the-minute design. This is what the designer Simona Garufi was trying to do. She decided to use dark tones from TAU’s Linen series to take a fresh approach to toilet design using the geometrical series of lines which are the characteristic feature of this covering.

The success of TAU and Porcelanatto at Casa Decor Madrid 2010, even before it opens to the public, with four spaces using the two brands’ materials, is largely due to the hard work and effort put into the joint project by the Madrid-based company ALCER Azulejos y Cerámica SL. ALCER distributes the TAU Group’s range of ceramics solutions in this part of the Spanish market and there is an excellent commercial and working relationship between the two companies, something for which the management of TAU and Porcelanatto are extremely grateful.

As he spoke to both the numerous journalists from all over the world and all the ceramics professionals who swarmed around the company’s stand at the Orange County Convention Center , once again Karim Rashid demonstrated the importance of colour and textures in his vibrant conceptual approach. These ideas are now expressed in the NO-Stalgia collection which he has designed for Porcelanatto and are a milestone in decoration. These are true “designer” products in the purest and most innovative sense of the word.

Everything that Karim Rashid does is all about freedom, pure colour, shapes and vibrancy, but it is also about being provocative and unconventional. No two of his ideas are the same and yet somehow you can always spot his style a mile off. All of this could be seen during his visit to Coverings 2010, where he underlined that in a grey, standardised world such as our own, colour is a fundamental value , a way of allowing users to put their own stamps on things, and that every product needs to offer them the best way of projecting their own personalities. This is why, before each creative challenge, he starts from scratch, with no preconceptions, and always develops a new world.

The other key factors in this work are the textures, a facet of building materials which have always been the most accurate reflection of society at any moment in time, although over the last few decades they have lost their function, becoming disconnected from the modern societies within which they are confined. This is why, in a technological, visual and three-dimensional world, Karim Rashid goes for digital, geometric finishes, an effect which sums up the relationship between mankind and the new communication technologies.

Now, and as a result of the involvement of Porcelanatto, which has unveiled this latest stage in his career at Coverings 2010, Karim Rashid is breaking the mould in contracting, architecture and interior design with NO-Stalgia, his ceramic calling card, and once again he manages to cross all boundaries without ever losing his own identity. He himself handled the presentation of the four NO-Stalgia collections, which he supervised and which have been designed in 60×60 format and in four colours, with the sole aim of making an impact. Their sinuous geometric shapes, together with lines that create impressive optical effects – which can have a positive influence on the state of mind of anyone who sees them – are the key asset of a concept which is totally new to the world of ceramics. Sensory (Grey, Nude, Red, Blue), Poetic (Blue, Nude, Pink, Carbon), Emotion (Fire-Orange, Grey, Lime, Carbon) and Desire (Nude, Carbon, Grey, Yellow) are all expressly designed for architects, decorators, interior designers, etc., i.e. professionals who have a clear vision of design, of the urban concept of the materials and who create “designer” spaces laid out for maximum impact. The ultimate goal is to express, renew and personalise each space in a totally unique way.

Karim Rashid also announced that he is working on the development of a cutting-edge project for a hotel in Berlin, which is also likely to set global standards in design, and for which he will be using Porcelanatto products, highlighting the fact that the two models which he will be using for his groundbreaking project will be designed exclusively by the Spanish brand, to show how much he has enjoyed working with the company for the first time and that there is a relationship built upon mutual trust. Indeed, Rashid highlighted the excellent finish offered by Porcelanatto ceramics as a decorative, architectural item, as well as providing wonderful value for money, making this one of the most expressive, competitive construction solutions on the market.

Karim Rashid ended his participation in Coverings 2010 with a visit to the Icex pavilion, where the designer and all the people who had attended his press conference shared an aperitif.

Gabbianelli has been making ceramic tiles for over 60 years, creating products whose superlative originality and style have made them a success all over the world. It all started in a simple atelier where architects and designers came together with the founder of the company to try out their ideas and designs on a ceramic medium. These were the years the building boom reached its peak: the main thing was to build fast and to build a lot. Gabbianelli had the intuition that there was not just the question of production volume, there was also the product’s aesthetics to consider, paving the way for a manufacturing method that would become widespread throughout the industry in the decades to come. The factory’s location at Milan and its close contacts with the growing design “industry” were unquestionably decisive factors in Gabbianelli’s recipe for success: how to take tiles from being a mere wall covering known for its simplicity and practicality, to a product used by interior designers. This is how ceramic tiles became a surface used in designer projects. The traditional decorative patterns of the old style of ceramics were abandoned in favour of original and contemporary designs, interpreting the new concept of the home. The continuous impulse towards technological research and innovation, characterise and distinguish Florim since its establishment; they are an integrating part of its history and are a reference point within the ceramic sector.

This path continuous and Floor Gres today presents on the market the Slim/4 project, the new 4 mm thick porcelain stoneware slabs.

It is a production technology developed in our establishments, completely different from what has been on the market to-date. The slabs are obtained by pressing: the result is a product that is highly resistant to stress, requires no reinforcing fibres and is easy to cut, drill and clean.

The production technology makes it possible to use the same graphics and raw materials used for the collections of traditional thickness. The tiles have given excellent results in all the tests carried out.

SLIM/4 is a product for floors and walls, particularly suitable for renovation works requiring installation over existing materials and any applications for curtain walls. The reduced thickness, lighter weight, easy transportation and handling make SLIM/4 the best response to the new requirements of the market.

This material has multiple advantages:
- makes it unnecessary to remove existing installations;
- reduces work time as well as costs;
- has technical characteristics similar to slabs with traditional thickness;
- applies a smaller weight on bearing structures and floors;

LENA series by AZUVI is a faithful reflection of Pulpis marble, whose most important quarry is located in Magdalena de Pulpis (Castellón).

AZUVI has obtained a through-body porcelain tiles series with an excellent design and finish. LENA is a product with shade variation, with tiles characterised by a unique pattern on each, relief work and original looking veins. These characteristics infuse settings with a sense of dynamism, giving them a wonderfully natural look.

This series fulfils the requirements to high bending strength and high resistance to knocks, atmospheric agents, frost, ice and ageing; it also has low water absorption. That is the reason why it is also used both inside and outside homes.

Spanish consumers consider ceramic tiles as the best industrial coating the market can offer. According to a the study Spanish Consumer Report, Carried out by experts from the Spanish Ceramics Technology Market Institute (ITC in Spanish), on the purchasing preferences of coatings, ceramic surfaces and coatings are in the lead compared to their competitors.

Ceramic tiles have obtained 3.94 points compared to marble (3.81), terrazzo (3.60) and wood (3.79). This is mainly because ceramics are easy to clean, although it also receieved a high score for its maintenance, innovation and quality.

However, ceramic tiles are below its competitors with regards to their natural look, warmness and prestige, aspects in which marble gets the highest score. Nevertheless, ITC highlights that the difference between ceramics and marble has been decreasing since 2002.

According to the study, 80% of those who refurbished their homes used ceramic tiles. Ceramic surfaces are stil the most demandes material for floors, bathrooms, kitchens and outerdoor areas, where other products are barely present, but it loses the lead in living rooms, dorms and indoor areas in general, where wood is still dominates.

Architects’ studio vnbarquitectos, based in the same town, has been commissioned with the project. The space in this large square will be distributed into a series of
zones, all of which are intended for different uses and age groups.
However, every effort has been made to eliminate all of the existing
barriers, to create an open, airy space that invites the population
to use it. It will feature a library, Wi-Fi zone, garden areas and a recreation of the Convent of San Francisco, whose remains lie under the subsoil of the square.

L’Antic Colonial will provide over 4,500m2 of natural stone paving, together with edging materials, coverings and other architectural features, all from the Java Flameado range.

L’Antic Colonial has worked on other projects involving public spaces in 2009, specializing in large-scale outdoor ones like parks, squares or gardens. The new headquarters, located in Washington DC, is designed to meet the new LEED-CI rating system and achieve the Platinum score. It is the first project to obtain certification under the latest version of the LEED green building rating system.

The USGBC outgrew its previous office space as a result of exponential growth over the past few years. Today, more than 35,000 projects are participating in the LEED system, comprising over 5.6 billion square feet of construction space in all 50 states and 91 countries. The expansion of the USGBC headquarters is reflective of the green building industry, which is projected to grow to $60 billion by 2010.
