History of Spanish ceramic Tiles.

A look into the history of ceramics shows the decisive influence of Spain in the birth and evolution of ceramic tiles, adapting the contributions of the Arab culture from the 11th Century.

In the Middle Ages, the Iberian Peninsula became the meeting place where different factors such as the rich Tardoroman and Visigothic ceramic tradition, the technological equipment and decorative repertoire of Egyptian-Mesopotamian tradition, together with the aesthetic Nordic and Mediterranean contributions to the new values of the Christian world would meet. The result was a kaleidoscopic, artistic panorama that, in spite of the disparity of the elements of origin, attained a surprising degree of aesthetic coherence equal to that attained in other areas of the culture, society or economy of Mudejar Spain.
First technological contributions of the 11th Century
Among the technological novelties that arrived with the invasion of Spain by the Arabs, what most stood out because of their subsequent consequences, were various ceramic processes that served to provide the product with a glassy layer that made it impermeable and moreover constituted the base and coating of its eventual chromatism or decoration. These processes include transparent or light green lead-glazing, decoration on white engobe and under a transparent glaze and metallic highlights, which was already originally done in the 11th Century in Mesopotamia, Persia or Egypt.

This technique soon reached the Iberian Peninsula and an important production factory was established in Malaga. The architectonic application of golden highlights as facing during the Islamic era was known, as the one-base semi-spherical segment that completed the turret of the greater mosque of Seville (12th Century) and other building in the city. This process was very much admired by travellers as witnessed by El Idrisi during his pass through Calatayud in 1154.
The pressure of the Christians in the 15th Century forced the metallic highlights production factory to be transferred from Malaga to Manises, which marked the beginning of a fruitful relation that would last for centuries between the Andalusian hub and the Mediterranean strip of the Iberian Peninsula, where the greater part of Spanish tiles are currently produced.
12th and 13th Century arabesque tiling
The first samples of glazed ceramic used in architecture dates back to the end of the 12th Century. Experts seem to connect the techniques used and their profuse application with Persian architecture, and suspect that the families of potters that emigrated to Al Andalus (Andalusia) could have influenced the development of arabesque tiling in the 14th and 15th Centuries following the invasion of Gen Gis Khan in Iran.
The use of tiled paving and stays became an extended custom in the south of Spain. Before 1240, lbn Said made reference to the ceramic tiles manufactured in Andalusia, where it was used in the facing of houses called a-zala,iyi (tiles). According to this chronicler, “it had a wide variety of colours and replaced the coloured marble used by the Orientals to embellish their homes.”
The arabesque tiles show how cultural elements developed and their designs became progressively more complex, with meticulous geometrical shapes, requiring more virtuous elaboration, as can be seen from the tiles that decorate some of the rooms of the Alhambra of Granada.

Granada 14th Century: culture and comfort
In the architectonic field, it was in the 14th and 15th Centuries that unusual levels of sophistication were reached, fundamentally in the arabesque tiling technique used preferably in paving and stays.
The extremely specialised labour required for this and other decorative works was a common feature of different sectors of the Granada economy during the 14th and 15th Centuries. Fed by the gold that came from Sudan, they also found an invaluable source of income in the export of their own image as a customhouse stamp of the standard of living of a courtly, aristocratic, educated society with an acute sense of comfort.
15th Century: Tiles from Manises for Europe, America and the Orient
During the Arab era, the areas surrounding Valencia were already an important ceramic producing region, and smart business policies were the best support for a distribution network of ceramic products in different Christian and Muslim Mediterranean states, through the port of Valencia which was the most active Mediterranean port at the time.
The favourable treatment given to products from Manises by the Republic of Venice was well known. Tiles from Manises and Paterna were also used in constructions in Liguria, and tiles were sent to Egypt, Syria and even Turkey.
However Italy was perhaps the most important client. In 1445-57, Alfonso the Magnanimous ordered his palace, Castel Nuovo, in Naples, to be floored with tiles form Manises decorated with his coat-of-arms. Manises also became the central supplier of paving for the Papacy itself, whose rooms it decorated during the 15th Century.

Seville in the 16th Century
Towards 1500, with a slump in production by Manises and Granada, other cities took over, especially Seville and Toledo. These cities were the main production centres of a new technique: the decoration of the main motif on the spongy square piece, which greatly facilitated laying and the appearance of the first mass production processes. The success of this technique was tremendous and within a few years it had invaded the Spanish, European and American markets. The latter specially needed a cheaper product that would allow it to be exported and above all, that would be easy to lay, something that Manises had left clear since the 14th Century through it commercial success.
Tiles from Seville also reached Great Britain, furnished the Vatican rooms of Pope Leon X (1513 – 1521) and the San Angelo castle in Rome, besides decorating palaces in Naples and Genoa that are conserved to date.

Protoindustry and industrialisation
This is the most outstanding information on Spanish tiles; origins full of history, tradition and culture.
Later, in the 17th and 18th Centuries, considerable changes took place that caused strong fluctuations in the production centres. Subsequently, in the 19th Century and beginning of the 20th Century, they entered a protoindustrial stage that resulted in the appearance of the first printed catalogues, the incorporation of promotional aspects of the product and the Universal Exhibition of Barcelona in 1888.
Years later, technological advances would bring Spanish ceramics to the superior quality levels that it has on the threshold of the 21st Century.

The London underground tube network is the largest, most extensive decorative tiling project in Britain; one that arguably helped to make the London Underground system the most famous in the world.

The London Underground rail network first began operation in 1863 initially running between Paddington and Farringdon Street and was the world’s first underground railway. CA Mission and Day of the Dead Tile Collections from The Tile Shop California, USA.

The Tile Shop are proud to offer this beautiful collection of handpainted tiles by California artist Elany Prusa, each show casing one of the 21 California mission churches.

Each unique design is hand-glazed (hand painted) on a 6 inch tile and then kiln-fired (at extreemly high temperatures) to achieve the stunning high-gloss shine of the glazes.

The heat-resistant tiles each include an attached wood-backing and cork feet. The tiles are suitable for hotplates, trivets or wall decor.

Founded in 1776, the mission at San Juan Capistrano was the 7th California mission established by the Spanish Missionaries.

Founded in 1771, the San Antonio Mission was the 3rd CA Mission established by the Spanish missionaries.

The variety available at this beautiful shop is is exstensive. Each design available would compliment any room they adorn, although the theme in some tiles available are an obvious choice for certain rooms. Also distinctive to this boutique style designer tile shop are the family crest tiles, which will add that personal touch to any family estate.

Another personal favourite of mine is ‘The Day of the Dead’ collection. Both quirky and dark these tiles are very curious and will definitely make a fashion statement if your bold and creative enough.

Each individual tile has an inscription on the back detailing elements of this annual Mexican celebration ‘El Dia do los Muertos’, Day of the Dead, and the image portrayed.

Close Encounters of the Tile Kind.

During my relentless research to discover the best, the most unique and most interesting tile related subjects I have admittedly stumbled on a recurring story. So I thought to my self this must be worth sharing on this site as this is our forte. The world of tiles and the wider scope of the arts are merging into one. Now amazingly, we can include bizzarre poetry with the possibility of hidden clues? Maybe not poetry but some sort of work of warped literature…does anyone know? Please if you have any ideas i am definitely keen to hear…as many others are, including this blogger….

Unless you’re hunting for them, the weird markers embedded in downtown streets in St. Louis don’t draw much attention.
For those who do notice, the words make little sense.

The shoe box-sized marker read: “TOyNBEE IDEA IN KUbricK’s 2001 RESURRECT DEAD ON PLANET JUPiTER.”

The plaques, numbering more than 100 and found on dozens of city streets across the United States and in three South American countries, present a riddle that may never be solved: What in the world – or on Jupiter, for that matter – does English historian Arnold J. Toynbee have to do with filmmaker Stanley Kubrick and with raising the dead?

St. Louis has three of the “Toynbee plaques,” or “tiles,” as they are often called. Kansas City has one. Some have called the markers the urban equivalent of crop circles. Others say they’re just quirky underground graffiti, some done by copycats.

No one has ever been caught or taken credit for this caper that dates back to at least the 1980s.
A Web site, www.toynbee.net, one of the best sources of information on the tiles, is dedicated to mapping and discussing the phenomenon.

Chris Clark went to the site after she stumbled across the plaques in the 1990s in St. Louis.
“The pleasure of these plaques is not so much in the solution and ‘whodunit,”’ Clark said. “It’s hearing the wild theories and stories that surround them.” Some have tried to make the connection to Kubrick and his sci-fi classic “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Internet searches return a load of theories, but the connection with the late filmmaker is vague, at best. “The meaning of the message on the tiles is pretty open-ended,” said Justin Duerr, a Toynbee tile fanatic. “You can draw a lot of connections between the two, depending on how far out you want to stretch it.”

Another variation reads: “TOyNBEE IDEA IN MOViE 2001 RESURRECT DEAD ON PLANET JUPiTER.” Sometimes, there are other cryptic messages as well. Duerr lives in Philadelphia, the place where many people believe the strange practice of stamping the message on city streets began. A plaque in Santiago, Chile, lists an “A. Toynbee” and a Philadelphia address, but the address – while real – provided no solution.
In 1983, an article in The Philadelphia Inquirer told of a man named James Morasco who said Toynbee’s theory of bringing dead molecules back to life on Jupiter appeared in Kubrick’s 1968 film. Many have argued that no such reference exists, but Jupiter is part of the movie.
Toynbee was best known for his writings on the rise and fall of civilizations.

In the late 1990s, Duerr became obsessed with the idea and the plaques that appear to be melted into the streets like crayons on a hot day. Last year he developed the Web site www.resurrectdead.com to document the tiles, and he says he plans to make a movie on the subject. Duerr said even after Morasco’s death in 2003, new plaques appeared in Philadelphia and elsewhere.

At one time, Duerr said, the tiles could be found every other block. Many have since been paved over or worn down to nothing by traffic. Many of the plaques look identical, as if made with a cookie cutter. Others change the wording slightly and take on a colorful style of their own. Some include political messages.

One Web site reported a Toynbee tile in Pittsburgh that offered instructions on how to make the plaques using several layers of linoleum and glue. Another tile reads, “You must make and glue tiles!” That was enough to persuade Duerr to make a tile of his own and slap it to a street in Philadelphia. He said his version looks almost like the others. His actions present the most obvious explanation: Other people were intrigued enough by their encounter with the tiles to make their own in various cities. Duerr said there’s even a name for such behavior: A meme, pronounced “meem,” meaning a cultural action that is transmitted and repeated over and over.
“I don’t believe there’s a lone gunman,” Duerr said. “I like to look at it as art that exists for a reason other than being in an art gallery.”

Is a porcelain tile better than ceramic?

Porcelain usually has a much lower water absorption level than normal glazed ceramic tile. They can usually be distinguished by appearance i.e. the colour/grain goes right through to the back of the tile. Porcelain tiles are frost proof and therefore more suitable for outside areas where temperatures drop to freezing.

There are now many tiles available with a porcelain biscuit and a pattern glazed onto the surface and in these cases the pattern does not go right through.

What is the difference in wall tiles and floor tiles?

Floor tiles have a different rating of glaze hardness which makes them suitable to walk on without showing wear. Floor tiles also have a stronger biscuit. It is the combination of glaze hardness and bisque hardness that makes them suitable for foot traffic. Wall tiles are usually a softer biscuit as they are double fired and the glaze is not trafficable. You can put floor tiles onto a wall but not wall tiles onto the floor.

Can I use any floor tile outside?

Firstly the recommendation is to use a tile with a water absorption of 3% or less to ensure that the tile is frost resistant. It is best to use a slip resistant tile outside and we have a large range of indoor and outdoor tiles that match, and give you a flow without compromising safety. Outdoor tiles have a textured or sanded finish and are tested for slip resistance rating. If you are doing a deck with no external access you may use a tile that has a degree of texture though not necessarily an anti-slip tile.

Can I use any tiles in and around my swimming pool?

You must use a floor grade tile which has a suitable porosity for the chemicals used in your pool. You must think about whether your pool is salt or chlorine, and whether you live in a frost free area. We recommend not less than 3% water absorption.

Are grouts waterproof and will the grout lines go mouldy?

Some grouts have inbuilt mould inhibitors so as long as the wet areas are aired you won’t have any problems. We do however, suggest that you seal all grout lines to assist in long term maintenance and to stop staining from the dyes in bathroom products or kitchen splashes.

How do I clean my tiles? Do I use normal household cleaners?

You can, however it is best to use a soap free cleaner which will not cause build-up and dull the look of your tiles. We are able to recommend the most suitable ‘aqua mix’ product for your requirements – these have been tested especially so that the pH levels won’t cause any breakdown in the grout or grout sealer.

Do I have to use small tiles in a small area?

No, there are no standard size rules. Larger tiles will have less grout lines so will look less ‘busy’. It is best to focus on the colour and texture of the tiles that you like rather than the size. Of course if you have a tiny bathroom a 600×600 size tile will be a little excessive and difficult to install.

I want ‘GRIP’ tiles for my bathroom. Aren’t shiny tiles slippery?

It is what we do to tiles that makes them slippery. Soap or shampoo build-up can cause this problem. A stainless steel shower tray can also be slippery when build-up occurs. A degree of caution is always necessary i.e. use a bathmat. Remember that wet lino or concrete are also slippery. Choose a tile you feel comfortable with. “Grip” or slip resistant tiles are usually designed for outdoors and will be difficult to keep clean indoors.

Why do I have to use an underlay?

To stop movement in the existing floor which could cause the tiles to crack. Determine the substrate/joist spaces and establish if it is feasible to use Flexible adhesive.

The first known Portuguese examples of the use of AZULEJOS as a monumental wall-covering employed Hispano-Moorish tiles which were imported from Seville in around 1503.

One of the lasting consequences of the Arab presence in the Iberian Peninsula was the continued practise of tile making. Seville was the great centre of the tile industry, which continued to employ the archaic “cuerda seca” and “cuenca” techniques until the mid XVI century.

The motifs on the tiles evolved from geometric Moorish lace-like and looping designs into European plant and animal themes which gradually progressed from the Gothic to the pure Renaissance style.

Nevertheless, quite apart from the motifs themselves, Portugal retained a Moorish taste for excess in the practise of completely covering surfaces with decorations – a kind of rejection of emptiness.

ALBARRADA – An urn, basket, vase or jar of flowers, sometimes flanked by birds, child figures or dolphins. Used as a free-standing decorative motif in the 17th century, it was commonly used in the 18th century in repetitive modules, sometimes separated by plant or architectural motifs to create facings with a strong decorative effect.

The XVIII Century
The “Great Production” of Tiles during the Reign of king Dom João V

The second quarter of the XVIII century witnessed an unprecedented increase in the manufacture of Portuguese tiles, partly due to large orders from Brazil.

This was the period of the so-called “Great Production”, which overlapped the reign of King Dom João V (1706-1750) and saw the execution of the largest cycles of historical panels ever employed in Portugal.

This increase in output led to the repetition of the same conformations, the use of ordered motifs like “albarradas” (vases of flowers) and the simplification of the painting of the scenes themselves. The surrounding frames also took on a major scenographic importance.

The continuation of the “Cycle of the Masters” can be seen in the quality of the work of a number of later painters such as Nicolau de Freitas, Teotónio dos Santos and Valentim de Almeida.

Alongside the religious themes ordered by the Church, the tiles used to decorate palaces began to employ more bucolic, mythological, hunting and war-like scenes, as well as those taken from daily life at court. This was particularly obvious in the so-called “welcoming figures” placed in the entrances to buildings.

Water is pressurised to 55000psi and piped to a cutting head. The cutting head has an orifice of only 1mm. The resulting water stream can be used to cut soft materials such as: Foam, Rubber, Plastics, Fibreglass, Laminates.

The History of Ceramic Tile in the United States

When I was asked to write a history of ceramic tile in the United States I took a long time thinking about how to approach the subject. Ceramic tile has a long history. Probably no one knows the actual beginning but tile has been around for a very long time. I remember how impressed I was with the tile still in good condition in the ruins of ancient Rome. The tile in Pompeii is still in excellent shape after 2000 years, although it was buried in volcanic ash for much of this time.

Recently a kiln was unearthed in Centamura del Chianti, near Siena, Italy from the 3rd century b.c.e. Broken pieces of ceramics were found in the ruins of the kiln. These were surmised to have been offered to the god of the kiln to bless the outcome of future firings. Making ceramics was a hazardous and speculative business in those days. But this article is about the more recent past where the outcome of the firings is much more predictable.

North American tile making had its roots in Europe where tile had been manufactured for years. Tile artisans brought this craft with them in the 1800′s and set up tile making factories all over the country. Tile was largely made by “batch firing” the tile in some form of stationery kiln, such as a beehive shaped brick kiln. The tiles were placed into the kiln and heated or baked until some transformation of the mineral particles occurred. This would cause the body to solidify and, if glazed, for the glaze to melt and fuse to the body of the tile. The process could take 24 hours or more for this single firing.

In the pre-World War II era, much of the tile was made in this batch fashion. The tile body material was fed into a press usually by hand, then dried, glazed and baked in a batch kiln. Loading and unloading kilns was a major labor-consuming item. Finishing was laborious as well and could involve hand painting tiles, silk screening, inserting different colored glazes and other forms of decoration. If a multi-colored tile was to be produced multiple firings would be required. Thus the tile would have to be hand-loaded in and out of the kiln and heated for many cycles before it was completed. This could take many days for completion of a production run. The amount of labor was very high.

The firing temperature in these batch kilns could vary quite a lot from one area of the kiln to another resulting in size and color variations as well as a high scrap rate. Thus the yield of a given run could be quite low.

One major improvement from these early method was the development of the tunnel kiln, a long structure that had moving transport devices conveying tile through continuously. The tiles ready for firing were loaded onto carts with support devices called “kiln furniture” and the carts pushed through the kiln by some means including human-power. It took a strong back to push kiln carts through a 200-foot or longer kiln. Other innovations in the early 1900′s included the use of conveyor belts to transport the tile from the press to the finishing department and into the kiln and mechanical presses to take the human muscle out of the process.

But the industry didn’t stop there and is still innovating. In the 1960′s early experimenting with a device called a “roller-hearth” kiln began. The device consisted of a series of ceramic rollers that were gear-driven and would transport a single layer of tiles through the firing zone of a kiln. This method had several advantages. Each tile was exposed to a very similar firing condition making the tiles more uniform. Also the firing time was reduced to less than 45 minutes and finally, the tiles could be automatically fed into and out of the kiln.

By the early 1980′s roller-hearth kilns were being installed in the United States. This was a sea change for our industry. Other innovations from this period included hydraulic presses that could generate very high pressure allowing for larger-sized tiles, greater body uniformity, and more output per stroke of the press.

The output of the earliest production roller-hearth kilns was about 6-7 million square feet per year. Today there are large kilns that will make 30 million square feet per year with the same number of workers. The process that is used for most tile production today is known as the pressed-dust method. It involves grinding the mineral constituents of the tile body in water slurry. The tile body is made up of a mixture of various mineral components depending on the desired properties of the finished tile, such as feldspar, ball-clay, talc, shale, etc. ground to a various particle sizes.

This slurry, which contains about 50% water is then spray-dried to a damp powder and stored to season it. From storage the powder is fed to the large presses, some exerting up to 7 tons of pressure, where it is pressed into the shape of the tile body. The next step is to convey the tiles into a drier to reduce the water content to about 2% and then to the glazing line (some tiles are not glazed) where a plethora of devices may be used to create the desired look. Some devices include sprayers, silk-screening devices, dry-glaze dispersers, waterfalls, rollers, texture imprinters etc.

From the glaze line the tiles enter the kiln where they may be fired once (monocottura) or several times if required by a specific design, Then the tiles are transported directly to an inspection area where a visual and/or electronic inspection of every tile occurs. The latest technology provides for complete computer testing for size, shape, flatness, and finish. Tiles are automatically sorted to a tolerance of ½ millimeter size and placed into appropriate caliber stacks and then put into marked cartons. Most of these steps take place with no human intervention in the latest technology driven factory.

At the end of the line, a robot places the cartons of tile on a pallet for movement into the warehouse. This is not to say that there are no workers in the plant. With all this high tech equipment the factory needs a highly trained and capable maintenance department. Unfortunately most plants have to contend with kiln fires, broken rollers, and other mishaps. Since the process is continuous for 24 hours a day 7 days a week, the crews must be ready at all times. Changeovers are required for the various colors, sizes of tiles, and textures. Ceramic engineers and technicians must be on hand to develop formulations and techniques for the different designs. The production managers would love to run all off-white 12X12 inch tiles all the time but today’s educated consumer wants variety.

Interestingly enough, despite all this technology there are still tile producers making hand-painted and formed tile that is batch-fired in the old way (except they are using small electric kilns instead of the old brick beehives). The Tile Council of North America has about 50 art tile makers using some of the techniques of yesteryear mentioned above.

What does this mean for the consumer? For one thing the reduction in labor has made ceramic tile very affordable. The price has never been lower in the current period. Tile is available in many sizes, designs, styles, textures, and colors thus freeing the designer to create a given look. Modern techniques permit the manufacturer to make tile that emulates natural products such as marble, limestone, granite, slate, etc. Tile that matches older styles is available for the period look. The properties of tile such as strength, shape, size tolerance, slip-resistance, color, shading, are much more uniform and predictable. New equipment can make individual tile that are 2X4 feet or larger.

Born in 1852 in Reus (Camp de Tarragona) and son of a copper maker from Riudoms,

from childhood Gaudí was an attentive observer of nature and felt attracted to its forms,

colours and geometry. In 1868, he decided to study architecture in Barcelona,

in a college dominated by neo-classical and romantic trends. Thus,

his first architectural pruduction swung between a reinterpretation

of historical canons with oriental influence and the recovery of medieval events.

Despite his youth he received the first assignments from the ecclesiastic world and the bourgeoisie,

who would always be his main clients. Among these,

the Association of Devotees of Saint Joseph stands out as they commissioned him

with the Expiatory Temple of the Sagrada Família (the cathedral of the modern Barcelona).

Of equal importance was the industrialist Eusebi Güell, the best client and essential patron,

who entrusted him with the construction of a palace, the curch for an industrial colony,

some pavilions for his summer residence and a city-garden.

After his death in 1926, he and his work entered a period of ostracismm until

the avant-gardist trends and the international movement recuperated

his figure while presenting him as an example of modernisation

and renewal of 20th century architecture.

The Fris studio comprises the professional photographers Eugeni Bofill (Barcelona, 1956), Francesc Morera (Queralbs, 1953)

and Roser Puigdefàbregas (Barcelona, 1964). The team specialises in architectural photography,

Shelf Life
Factory sealed containers of this product are guaranteed to
be of first quality for one (1) year if stored off the ground in
a dry area. High humidity will reduce the shelf life of the
bagged product.
Limitations
- Use LATAPOXY® 300 Epoxy Adhesive for installing
green marble or water sensitive natural stone and
agglomerates.
- Not for heavy duty applications
-Not use over hardwood or strip wood flooring, particle
board, luan plywood, or Masonite
- Adhesives/mastics, mortars and grouts for ceramic tile,
pavers, brick and stone are not replacements for
waterproof membranes. When a waterproof membrane
is required, use a LATICRETE Waterproof Membrane.
- NOTE: Surfaces must be structurally sound, stable and
rigid enough to support ceramic/stone tile, thin brick
and similar finishes. Substrate deflection under all live,
dead and impact loads, including concentrated loads,
must not exceed L/360 for thin bed ceramic tile/brick
installations or L/480 for thin bed stone installations
where L=span length.
Cautions
During cold weather, protect finished work from traffic
until fully cured.
- Contains Portland cement and silica sand. May irritate
eyes and skin. Avoid contact with eyes or prolonged
contact with skin. In case of contact, flush thoroughly
with water. Use rubber gloves when handling and wear
eye protection to avoid eye contact.
- Do not take internally. Silica sand may cause cancer or
serious lung problems. Avoid breathing dust. Wear a
respirator in dusty areas.
- Keep out of reach of children.
