All eyes on Karim Rashid and his own unique vision of design as he visits the TAU-Porcelanatto stand at the Coverings 2010 trade show .
The international trendsetter, one of the most globally renowned names in design, brings his vibrant, colourful world to ceramic solutions and comes to the United States to promote the ‘NO-Stalgia’ collection which he has produced for the famous Spanish brand, clearly breaking away from all established concepts with a new language
All eyes were on the TAU-Porcelanatto stand at Coverings 2010. The visit of Karim Rashid, the international trendsetter in fashion, design and interior design, was hot news at the ceramic trade show held in Orlando (which ends today), and where he gave a press conference to explain his own unique vision of the world we live in, a philosophy which is expressed in every single one of the many varied facets of his work.

As he spoke to both the numerous journalists from all over the world and all the ceramics professionals who swarmed around the company’s stand at the Orange County Convention Center , once again Karim Rashid demonstrated the importance of colour and textures in his vibrant conceptual approach. These ideas are now expressed in the NO-Stalgia collection which he has designed for Porcelanatto and are a milestone in decoration. These are true “designer” products in the purest and most innovative sense of the word.

Everything that Karim Rashid does is all about freedom, pure colour, shapes and vibrancy, but it is also about being provocative and unconventional. No two of his ideas are the same and yet somehow you can always spot his style a mile off. All of this could be seen during his visit to Coverings 2010, where he underlined that in a grey, standardised world such as our own, colour is a fundamental value , a way of allowing users to put their own stamps on things, and that every product needs to offer them the best way of projecting their own personalities. This is why, before each creative challenge, he starts from scratch, with no preconceptions, and always develops a new world.

The other key factors in this work are the textures, a facet of building materials which have always been the most accurate reflection of society at any moment in time, although over the last few decades they have lost their function, becoming disconnected from the modern societies within which they are confined. This is why, in a technological, visual and three-dimensional world, Karim Rashid goes for digital, geometric finishes, an effect which sums up the relationship between mankind and the new communication technologies.

Now, and as a result of the involvement of Porcelanatto, which has unveiled this latest stage in his career at Coverings 2010, Karim Rashid is breaking the mould in contracting, architecture and interior design with NO-Stalgia, his ceramic calling card, and once again he manages to cross all boundaries without ever losing his own identity. He himself handled the presentation of the four NO-Stalgia collections, which he supervised and which have been designed in 60×60 format and in four colours, with the sole aim of making an impact. Their sinuous geometric shapes, together with lines that create impressive optical effects – which can have a positive influence on the state of mind of anyone who sees them – are the key asset of a concept which is totally new to the world of ceramics. Sensory (Grey, Nude, Red, Blue), Poetic (Blue, Nude, Pink, Carbon), Emotion (Fire-Orange, Grey, Lime, Carbon) and Desire (Nude, Carbon, Grey, Yellow) are all expressly designed for architects, decorators, interior designers, etc., i.e. professionals who have a clear vision of design, of the urban concept of the materials and who create “designer” spaces laid out for maximum impact. The ultimate goal is to express, renew and personalise each space in a totally unique way.

Karim Rashid also announced that he is working on the development of a cutting-edge project for a hotel in Berlin, which is also likely to set global standards in design, and for which he will be using Porcelanatto products, highlighting the fact that the two models which he will be using for his groundbreaking project will be designed exclusively by the Spanish brand, to show how much he has enjoyed working with the company for the first time and that there is a relationship built upon mutual trust. Indeed, Rashid highlighted the excellent finish offered by Porcelanatto ceramics as a decorative, architectural item, as well as providing wonderful value for money, making this one of the most expressive, competitive construction solutions on the market.

Karim Rashid ended his participation in Coverings 2010 with a visit to the Icex pavilion, where the designer and all the people who had attended his press conference shared an aperitif.

THE NEW HIGH TECH PRODUCTION LINE EXTREME UNVEILED-innovative tile size 150x75cm,GranitiFiandre.

On the occasion of the first GranitiFiandre Open, in the presence of the Mayor of Castellarano and the press, the new high tech production line GranitiFiandre was unveiled. The Mayor Alberto Caprari and the President and CEO Graziano Verdi cut the ribbon to start the work of the new plant.

GranitiFiandre has assigned huge investments in this valuable renewal, a further step towards the future for the company, to consolidate and develop the technological and stylistic leadership recognized by the world of architecture. The installation of this new facility, is a necessary step to achieve ever higher results: the new plant will produce unique slabs in the innovative size 150x75cm.
The intervention was made on one of the two GranitiFiandre productive areas, on a surface of about 16,000 square meters.
The plant has a new 5,000 tons press equipped with multi atomized loading wagon system, using a technology conceived by GranitiFiandre technical staff.
A second press of 7500 tons is equipped with a atomized multi carpet layers charging system, also designed and realized by the company technical staff.
This second facility is dedicated to the production of large size 150×75 cm.

This innovative format is currently the last frontier of GranitiFiandre production. It gives an answer to the needs of architecture and design, providing slabs which guarantee an unique visual impact. The large size gives continuity in the floors and walls covering and is suitable for high performances, both in the residential and in the great distribution, and can also be applied to ventilated façades and raised floors.

The first GranitiFiandre Open was also the occasion to present the Spring’s news.
Firts of all, the Piasentina NewStone, renewed thanks to a technological and stylistic restyling that emphasizes the value of a successful GranitiFiandre material. Thanks to new technologies, today Piasentina (proposed in two colors and three finishes) is presented as a complete interior and exterior proposal, ductile material for modern and avant-garde building.

Then comes the new XL120 NewGround, a new size which enriches the range of the NewGround collection. The collection is made of three colors in the 120×60 cm size: White, Silver and Anthracite. This latter was selected by the Commissioner of the Government for the paving of the Italian Pavilion at the Universal Exhibition in Shanghai in 2010, reflecting the creativity and excellence in Italy. XL120NewGround is a material that well represents GranitiFiandre constant attention to ecology and environment, because it remains within the parameters required by the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), the system of quality assessment in terms of energy and environmental issues within the construction or renovation of environmentally sustainable buildings. Silver and Anthracite XL120 NewGround are made for more than 40% from recycled materials.

Finally, the absolute novelty is the i.Q Laying System, the revolutionary “smart” installation system patented by GranitiFiandre that doesn’t require the use of adhesives and sealants. A method labelled as “smart”, being able to adapt to the subfloor or existing floor without the need for invasive interventions.

“I thank the Mayor of Castellarano for participating in this important moment – said Graziano Verdi, President and CEO of GranitiFiandre – which highlights the efforts of our company in this period of great economic crisis. The achieved results, the constant push for the renewal evidenced by the innovative proposals submitted, and especially the choice of GranitiFiandre as partner of the Commissioner General of the Government for the Expo in Shanghai, is the best evidence of our being recognized as a spearhead of Made in Italy”.

Bathroom trends 2010-new contemporary bathroom features and new ceramic tile collection from Franco Pecchioli.

Bathroom tile ideas from Franco Pecchioli is a new contemporary bathroom features a new ceramic tile collection for your bathroom inspiration. The piece de resistance of this elegant bathroom is the bathtub, finished inside and out with a blend of mixed motifs – ceramic slabs on the exterior, square ceramic tiles lining the interior, and flower pattern tiles at the very bottom.

Drenched in vivid oceanic shades of aquamarine speckled with black and white, the bathroom is bathed in the soothing tones of the deep. Bringing water and earth together, these ceramic bathroom tiles incorporate organic materials like metals and mosaics for a raw yet refined look. The layering of pattern and color – one of the year’s hottest trends – comes to life in this chic space. Square tiles adorn floors and walls, while mosaic motif tiles add further interest to the walls. Surrounding this amazing sink and matching fixtures by Ideal Standard, a continuous aquamarine slab countertop features a glossy, wet finish that resembles the water’s surface.

Fall Color Trends – Bisazza color palette for Autumn 2009. The color palette for Autumn

Fall Color Trends – Bisazza color palette for Autumn 2009.

The color palette for Autumn 2009 is diverse, unique and representative of the current trends in fashion and interior design. Lush, saturated shades paired with earthy neutrals make up the prominent colors for Fall 2009.

The palette, including deep red, honey yellow, purple, iron grey, burnt sienna, olive green, rose, tan and electric blue, offers accent colors as well as simply understated, yet glamorous colors for brilliant bases.

A mix of these colors will together complete interior décor to last from Autumn through the year. Grey mixed with electric blue and purple create a modern, eclectic motif perfect for the most innovative of spaces. Rose, treated as a neutral, supplies subtle sophistication and paired with olive green and tan, creates a quintessential design motif. Warmer tones of burnt sienna, red and honey yellow are classic for Fall, bringing to mind changing leaves, deep sunsets and golden autumn mornings. The subdued tones of Fall mixed with brighter counterparts carry brilliantly into Winter and through Spring and Summer.

RED

BROWN

Bisazza glass mosaic is offered in solid tile colors from the classic beauty red (SILVIA), the balanced and traditional color to the seasonal favorite burnt sienna, a rich and deepened shade of orange (CHINA BIRDS BROWN, ESTERINA, TERRA, HANAMI ARANCIO). Bisazza’s shades of grey (ISIDE and VELVET GERY ORO BIANCO), green (ELENA) as well as the beautiful rose, both vibrant and soft, as well as each seasonal color in between (MARILYN, SMALTO ROSA and SUITE VIOLA) offer a palette suitable for the most subdued or outspoken spaces. The unique blend and integration of colors makes it appealing for Fall application yet perfect for year-round interior or exterior commercial and residential design.

Nobuyoshi Araki- advertising campaign for Bisazza.

Nobuyoshi Araki, one of Japan’s most provocative, and sought-after, photographers, has created the new 2009 advertising campaign for Bisazza that debuts internationally from April across Europe, USA and Australia.

Expressing Araki’s original and highly recognised style, the provocative yet iconic campaign represents Araki’s personal interpretation of the Bisazza brand.

As usual, the central protagonist of Araki’s shots is an oriental woman, most often tied as per the ancient art of Japanese bondage or kinbaku. Her look (glance), with its strong evocative force, involves the observer into an emotional reflection.

Araki’s photography, as an authentic artistic expression, reveals itself in a unique and inimitable style, making the new Bisazza campaign an exercise in “visual poetry”.

The involvement of an artist like Araki in the new advertising campaign further confirms Bisazza’s love for avant-garde artistic expression, and reinforces the company’s philosophy to move the brand forward and anticipate new trends.

Architects’ studio vnbarquitectos, based in the same town, has been commissioned with the project. The space in this large square will be distributed into a series of
zones, all of which are intended for different uses and age groups.
However, every effort has been made to eliminate all of the existing
barriers, to create an open, airy space that invites the population
to use it. It will feature a library, Wi-Fi zone, garden areas and a recreation of the Convent of San Francisco, whose remains lie under the subsoil of the square.

L’Antic Colonial will provide over 4,500m2 of natural stone paving, together with edging materials, coverings and other architectural features, all from the Java Flameado range.

L’Antic Colonial has worked on other projects involving public spaces in 2009, specializing in large-scale outdoor ones like parks, squares or gardens. Examples are Plaza del Ayuntamiento in Villarreal, which has a special sentimental and cultural value, or the square of Banca March in Palma de Mallorca, using new paving in keeping with the architecture of the building. L’Antic Colonial, the specialist in natural stone, offers a wide range of materials for use outdoors and indoors, including marble, slate, granite, travertine, limestone and sandstone.

StonePeak Ceramics 12×24 Limestone Gray porcelain tile has been chosen for the lobby and reception area of the new US Green Building Council headquarters.

The new headquarters, located in Washington DC, is designed to meet the new LEED-CI rating system and achieve the Platinum score. It is the first project to obtain certification under the latest version of the LEED green building rating system.

The USGBC outgrew its previous office space as a result of exponential growth over the past few years. Today, more than 35,000 projects are participating in the LEED system, comprising over 5.6 billion square feet of construction space in all 50 states and 91 countries. The expansion of the USGBC headquarters is reflective of the green building industry, which is projected to grow to $60 billion by 2010.

StonePeak Ceramics is proud to have been chosen to participate in such a prestigious project, which is paving the way for the future of green building.

Vives Azulejos y Gres- future tile collections at Cersaie2009,Bologna.

There are several important events in the ceramic sector. Now it is time for Cersaie fair that takes place in Bologna from the 29th of September until the 3rd of October.During this period, Vives stand has had once more a great attendance. This is the result of Vives trajectory, based on the efficient working of its companies.

Vives has shown some of its new products as a preview of its future collections. Some of these new models are Onix, Hidra and Nut series, as well as the new size 60×120.Ónix 60×60 is a polished and rectified porcelain tile. This series, provided with a perfect chromatic combination and an extra shine, becomes an elegant choice.

Hidra (45×45 and 60×90) is a rectified porcelain series with a P.I. level higher than the average. It is also characterized for its high slip resistance. The combination of both features makes Hidra series perfect for public areas, with a high transit.

Nut (60×60) is an alternative which, thanks to its light tonality, gives brightness to the spaces where it is used. Provided with Vives slip resistance system, it offers both safety and beauty.

Regarding the new sizes, the Condor series in 60×120 was presented in Cersaie. This series is suitable for both ventilated façades and floors.

RAK Ceramics launches-RAK slim-A unique “ green building” concept.

A unique “ green building” concept product from RAK Ceramics that contributes to the
Environment – possible only with High Technology and Innovation from RAK Ceramics
RAK Ceramics has successfully launched the commercial production of Thin Tiles of 4.5 mm thickness. It is
a trend setting development and a unique technological achievement perfected after numerous trials and experiments.
RAKSLIM is a Gres Porcellanato tile offered in Matt Finish
The greatest beneficiary is the enviroment, and other benefits are all commercial down the distribution level & the
user level. Having a very high satisfactory strength by international standards, RAKSLIM is a tile that is like half the
thickness of a normal tile, but with full benefits of a tile of normal thickness.
This way , thousands of tonnes of raw materials starting from clays– natural & otherwise will be saved. Energy costs
in firing the tile are also considerably lower,
and last but not the least , the emissions from plants that is a result of
manufacturing of the tiles is far lower as lesser energy is consumed Lesser raw materials &
chemicals are used in the process.

Technical Parameters & Usage.
The great advantages of the RAKSLIM range are

- Great Strength of tile in comparison with the tile thickness
Breaking strength & modulus of rupture besides other parameters of testing
all indicate the great performance of this tile. The Breaking Strength is a
minimum of 700N and the Modulus of Rupture is a minimum of 40N/mm2
for models of size 30×60 with 4.5mm thick

- Great cost cutting in transporting the product. Almost twice the quantum shipped in a container against the regular
thickness.
- Ease of handling- lifting of slimmer tiles is much easier and work gets accomplished faster
- Easy installation with new adhesive mediums coming in the market
- Easy to cut and drill.
- The weight of one cartoon of size ( 30×60 ) is only 22 Kgs making it a worker friendly tile.

Porcelanosa Group- Ston-Ker® Ecologic-need to respect the environment and save energy. The need to respect

Porcelanosa Group- Ston-Ker® Ecologic-need to respect the environment and save energy.

The need to respect the environment and save energy as priorities compelled Porcelanosa Group to unite time, effort and technology in its search for materials in which recycling contribute to bring about a world ruled by values which bring industry and nature closer together. In this line of research and business, Porcelanosa Group has created the range Ston-Ker® Ecologic, the result of 30 years of improvements in the productive system of Porcelanosa Group, always concerned with and involved in the care of the natural environment. Ston-Ker® Ecologic is made from pre-consumption recycled materials that are reincorporated into the production process. This makes for a substantial reduction in raw material consumption and a significant energy savings. Thus, the manufacturing process of these tiles draws on practically all first-generation, untreated shard (both neutral and coloured), as well as the dust emissions from the pumping of depuration systems, so as not to generate waste products which would have to be subsequently treated and managed. Ston-Ker® Ecologic has the Green USA Building, Ecotech Porcelanosa Group and Network Riba Providers certificates.
This initiative is not merely a market strategy, since it has intensified a search of technologically state-of-the-art products combined with the most innovative designs and the reliability of the Porcelanosa Group’s business philosophy.

Ston-Ker® Ecologic, in its four models of the Trafic series, is one of the Group’s great novelties. Like the rest of the series, Sand Trafic, highly resistant, offers quality. These ceramic tiles are ideal for both interior and exterior coverings, including those in highly-transited areas. Anthracite Trafic brings out a refreshing contrast in spaces, and it has, as the rest of the models in this series, an anti-slip version suitable for wet areas. Silver Trafic and Steel Trafic reflect in their colours the high precision, strength and modernity of a brand linked to environmental values. It is noticeable that all the water used in the manufacture process of Ston-Ker® Ecologic comes from Porcelanosa’s water depuration systems.

The R+Evolution collection breathes into life, the innovative ceramic series designed exclusively for DesignTale Studio by Karim Rashid. Flooring and wall cladding dress spaces with shapes and colours featuring a modern design, thus creating an effect of chromatic motion. The right collection to dress unique and modern bathrooms, with lively colours perfectly mirroring Rashid’s artistic flair. Let us not forget that the Anglo-Egyptian designer was one of the protagonists at the first edition of Design on Stage 2007, at the Triennale in Milan, and he designed a “Parete d’Autore”, presented together with the projects of other 5 designers from the world of fashion and art.

Mosaic marble was created inJune1968 in LebanonTo fill gaps in the mosaic market and to fill homes with beauty and art. The marble mosaic tradition is a form of art decoration that has existed for nearly four thousand years, with origins in the Greek architecture.

The amount of time and labor expended to create these works of art are phenomenal yet the outcome presents an appealing marriage of intricate colorful patterns and images reflected in the austerity and solidity of stone

We use over 40 marble , granite and other natural colored stones to give you the possibility to pick any colors of your choice .

Dimensions:40cm(15.6inches)

Marble mosaics can create an extra dimension to particular spaces such as tables, pillars, hallways, pools, archways, kitchens, dining/living areas, fireplaces, receiving areas and room centers.

Other possibilities are uses as a stone carpet or wall decorations, going from ancient Roman mosaic to company logos.

Rather than machine cut, mass-produced marble tiles, our products are one of a kind, fully hand-made masterpieces, each a finely crafted statement that speaks eloquently of elegance and originality.

Since all the marble is hand cut, the flexibility to create any shape or pattern is infinite. The sizes of the individual marble pieces range between 0.25 and 1 cm.

Mosaic marble creates contemporary mosaics for gallery, architectural, community and home settings. Our mosaics are produced using the finest materials gathered from sources around the world.

Whether interpreting a clients vision or creating a unique artwork, mosaic marbles enthusiasm for the art of mosaic and pride in workmanship are evident in every finished piece.

Decorating with Mosaic Glass Tiles from Bisazza.

Mosaic glass tiles from Bisazza are well known all around the world. They have more than 50 years of history and during that time developed a lot of collections. They have even begun to combine mosaic with furniture. Bisazza pays outstanding attention to detail, and thanks to that, their mosaic tiles can be anything you desire them to be. Mosaics can curve around corners, be used as a floor treatment, decorate a bath or just be used in any place where you want to attract people’s attention. Nowadays you can find mosaics on living room walls or office walls, in bathrooms, on pool walls or even on a courtyard floor. Although sometimes Mosaics are quite an expensive pleasure, they are definitely worth the price for those who want to add something special to their place. Visit Bisazza’s site for more details.

Born in 1852 in Reus (Camp de Tarragona) and son of a copper maker from Riudoms,

from childhood Gaudí was an attentive observer of nature and felt attracted to its forms,

colours and geometry. In 1868, he decided to study architecture in Barcelona,

Types of tiles-Tiles and finishes.

Tiles and finishes, such as laminate or stainless steel, provide a protective cover for your wet areas and work spaces and heavy traffic areas throughout the home.

Types of tiles

Ceramic tiles

Made by firing clay and can be glazed, which adds colour and pattern, or remain unglazed to create a natural look and are available in a range of colours, shapes and sizes.

Terracotta - the cheapest ceramic tile, terracotta is porous, prone to chipping and cracking, and will stain. They are unglazed and create a natural look with earthy colours. Natural terracotta is not ideal for outdoor use, but some manufacturers make pre-sealed, salt-safe products.

Stone - includes limestone, travertine, marble, and more. Natural stone tiles have a great look. They’re more expensive than terracotta, and while they are more durable – especially older stone, like marble – you should seal them if using them outdoors.

Mosaic tiles are small pieces of stone, glass or ceramic, which are glued onto a base to create patterns and designs. Mosaic tiles mainly feature in bathrooms, but look stunning when used as a kitchen splashback. The tiles can be laid as plain colours or use different colours to create stunning designs and patterns.

Marble & Granite tiles are very hardy and durable, needing very little maintenance once down. Polished tiles can create a slippery hazard.

Porcelain tiles

Glazed porcelain – this tile has a porcelain ‘biscuit’, or foundation, over which a ceramic is applied, to give the look of, for example, terracotta, but with more durability.

Glazed through-body porcelain – the drawback of a glazed porcelain tile is that the surface glaze has the same weaknesses as a normal ceramic tile – it’s prone to chipping, and when it does, you’ll see the differently coloured porcelain biscuit underneath. A glazed through-body tile mixes a pigment into the porcelain so the biscuit looks the same as the glaze. If the glaze chips, it won’t look so unsightly.

Double charged – this is a popular choice because it gives the look of natural stone like marble and granite, but with the strength of a full porcelain tile. They’re so called because two different hues of porcelain are fused together when the tiles are made. Although these tiles don’t have the headaches of natural stone, they are more expensive.

Round edge and bullnose – some retailers such as Amber offer a service to give tiles a rounded edge, for use on stairs or around a pool. They can also take this concept a step further with tiles of a uniform thickness, and laminate them together and shape into a bullnose. These laminated tiles are then used to create an aesthetic overhang effect like a paver.

When selecting tiles, remember:

Dark or off-white grout is easier to clean than white grout

Consider the extra floor height and it’s affect on the doors and room entries

Experiment by laying tiles in non-traditional patterns for a different look – ask your tiler for some ideas

Tile over the top of existing tiles if possible.

Buying tips

Lower-end ceramic tiles are generally not recommended for outdoor applications, although they can be protected with a sealer

High-end porcelain tiles are saltwater and chlorine safe, won’t absorb oil and other food matter from entertaining and barbecue areas and are more resistant to losing their colour over time

There are a number of products on the market that mix the best qualities of porcelain and ceramic that are suitable for situations where a full porcelain tile is not required, like under a patio

Make sure you’re buying good quality, pre-treated tiles, or at the least, are using a good sealer.

Quality

Generally a good way to ascertain the quality of tiles is by the country of origin. Tiles from Italy, Spain, and Arab countries, for example, are produced to a higher standard than tiles from countries like China.

Don’t just buy a tile if it’s porcelain, make sure it’s been made properly. For example, a good tile may be vitrified – fired at the same temperature as glass, 2300C – which will give the tile massive strength. However a cheaper porcelain tile may not be sealed properly.

Non-slip rating

For outdoor applications, tiles must be non-slip, as governed by an Australian Standard. Tiles are given an ‘R rating’ based on how they perform in a test using a ramp and oil. The lowest allowed rating is R9, and the highest possible is R12. For pool areas, the tile must be at least R11.

Strangely, the texture of the tile is not a good indicator of its slipperiness. The most non-slip tiles are some of the smoothest – high-quality tiles from countries like Italy and Spain.

Tiling

Competent DIYers can do their own tiling, but if you are uncertain of your skills, leave the work to a qualified tiler

Use a tiler for your bathroom refit to strip or resurface existing tiles before refitting new ones

Consider colour, function, durability, style, slip rating and maintenance when researching flooring and wall tiling options

Installing tiles

Tiles must be laid on a concrete slab, which will give the tiles a uniform flatness. They are glued to the slab and finished with grout between the gaps.

If your tiles are not already protected against the elements, you need to apply a pre-sealer to them before laying. The oily mixture makes it easy to fix the tile with grout. After the tiles are laid, a penetrating seal is applied. This mixture literally penetrates halfway through the tile to protect it. This process is especially important for ceramic tiles.

Finishes

Acrylic

Corian is a smooth non-porous acrylic material used for benchtops and splashbacks that has no open joins, eliminating mould and mildew. Corian sheets are joined together with a special adhesive, giving a smooth, seamless appearance, and creating the impression that an entire area – such as a long kitchen benchtop – has been made from a single piece.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel is a stylish hardy option that won’t discolour and is fairly easy to clean. Brushed stainless steel is the most popular finish, says Greg from Terry Hayes Agencies, as it doesn’t show blemishes as easily as a reflective finish. The stainless steel is cut to a standard (average) size of 900mm or 1200mm with a height of 750mm (other sizes are available), which enables same day installation. Clean the surface with a special stainless steel cleaner and take care not to use abrasive products to prevent scratching the surface.

Laminate

Laminate splashbacks are a cheap and versatile option. They come in a variety of finishes and looks to suit most décor from plain colours to marble look-alikes, which can match or contrast benchtops. Laminate is ideally suited to smooth flat walls, if walls are not super smooth, the laminate can be glued to board, than affixed to the wall with liquid nails. Laminate splashbacks can be bought from kitchen stores and are available for DIY or DFY (done for you) installation. You could expect to pay about $300 per sheet, which covers about seven meters of spashback 600mm high.

History of Spanish Tiles.

A look into the history of ceramics shows the decisive influence of Spain in the birth and evolution of ceramic tiles, adapting the contributions of the Arab culture from the 11th Century.

In the Middle Ages, the Iberian Peninsula became the meeting place where different factors such as the rich Tardoroman and Visigothic ceramic tradition, the technological equipment and decorative repertoire of Egyptian-Mesopotamian tradition, together with the aesthetic Nordic and Mediterranean contributions to the new values of the Christian world would meet. The result was a kaleidoscopic, artistic panorama that, in spite of the disparity of the elements of origin, attained a surprising degree of aesthetic coherence equal to that attained in other areas of the culture, society or economy of Mudejar Spain.
First technological contributions of the 11th Century
Among the technological novelties that arrived with the invasion of Spain by the Arabs, what most stood out because of their subsequent consequences, were various ceramic processes that served to provide the product with a glassy layer that made it impermeable and moreover constituted the base and coating of its eventual chromatism or decoration. These processes include transparent or light green lead-glazing, decoration on white engobe and under a transparent glaze and metallic highlights, which was already originally done in the 11th Century in Mesopotamia, Persia or Egypt.

This technique soon reached the Iberian Peninsula and an important production factory was established in Malaga. The architectonic application of golden highlights as facing during the Islamic era was known, as the one-base semi-spherical segment that completed the turret of the greater mosque of Seville (12th Century) and other building in the city. This process was very much admired by travellers as witnessed by El Idrisi during his pass through Calatayud in 1154.
The pressure of the Christians in the 15th Century forced the metallic highlights production factory to be transferred from Malaga to Manises, which marked the beginning of a fruitful relation that would last for centuries between the Andalusian hub and the Mediterranean strip of the Iberian Peninsula, where the greater part of Spanish tiles are currently produced.
12th and 13th Century arabesque tiling
The first samples of glazed ceramic used in architecture dates back to the end of the 12th Century. Experts seem to connect the techniques used and their profuse application with Persian architecture, and suspect that the families of potters that emigrated to Al Andalus (Andalusia) could have influenced the development of arabesque tiling in the 14th and 15th Centuries following the invasion of Gen Gis Khan in Iran.
The use of tiled paving and stays became an extended custom in the south of Spain. Before 1240, lbn Said made reference to the ceramic tiles manufactured in Andalusia, where it was used in the facing of houses called a-zala,iyi (tiles). According to this chronicler, “it had a wide variety of colours and replaced the coloured marble used by the Orientals to embellish their homes.”
The arabesque tiles show how cultural elements developed and their designs became progressively more complex, with meticulous geometrical shapes, requiring more virtuous elaboration, as can be seen from the tiles that decorate some of the rooms of the Alhambra of Granada.

Granada 14th Century: culture and comfort
In the architectonic field, it was in the 14th and 15th Centuries that unusual levels of sophistication were reached, fundamentally in the arabesque tiling technique used preferably in paving and stays.
The extremely specialised labour required for this and other decorative works was a common feature of different sectors of the Granada economy during the 14th and 15th Centuries. Fed by the gold that came from Sudan, they also found an invaluable source of income in the export of their own image as a customhouse stamp of the standard of living of a courtly, aristocratic, educated society with an acute sense of comfort.
15th Century: Tiles from Manises for Europe, America and the Orient
During the Arab era, the areas surrounding Valencia were already an important ceramic producing region, and smart business policies were the best support for a distribution network of ceramic products in different Christian and Muslim Mediterranean states, through the port of Valencia which was the most active Mediterranean port at the time.
The favourable treatment given to products from Manises by the Republic of Venice was well known. Tiles from Manises and Paterna were also used in constructions in Liguria, and tiles were sent to Egypt, Syria and even Turkey.
However Italy was perhaps the most important client. In 1445-57, Alfonso the Magnanimous ordered his palace, Castel Nuovo, in Naples, to be floored with tiles form Manises decorated with his coat-of-arms. Manises also became the central supplier of paving for the Papacy itself, whose rooms it decorated during the 15th Century.

Seville in the 16th Century
Towards 1500, with a slump in production by Manises and Granada, other cities took over, especially Seville and Toledo. These cities were the main production centres of a new technique: the decoration of the main motif on the spongy square piece, which greatly facilitated laying and the appearance of the first mass production processes. The success of this technique was tremendous and within a few years it had invaded the Spanish, European and American markets. The latter specially needed a cheaper product that would allow it to be exported and above all, that would be easy to lay, something that Manises had left clear since the 14th Century through it commercial success.
Tiles from Seville also reached Great Britain, furnished the Vatican rooms of Pope Leon X (1513 – 1521) and the San Angelo castle in Rome, besides decorating palaces in Naples and Genoa that are conserved to date.

Protoindustry and industrialisation
This is the most outstanding information on Spanish tiles; origins full of history, tradition and culture.
Later, in the 17th and 18th Centuries, considerable changes took place that caused strong fluctuations in the production centres. Subsequently, in the 19th Century and beginning of the 20th Century, they entered a protoindustrial stage that resulted in the appearance of the first printed catalogues, the incorporation of promotional aspects of the product and the Universal Exhibition of Barcelona in 1888.
Years later, technological advances would bring Spanish ceramics to the superior quality levels that it has on the threshold of the 21st Century.

Maurizio Favetta presented his project for the “Riyadh Gallery Hotel”-Ceramica Fioranese.

Maurizio Favetta presented his project for the “Riyadh Gallery Hotel”, representing the aesthetic and formal mood of a new commission for the hospitality industry in the Saudi capital of Riyadh that the Milanese architect is currently designing, as part of the “Linking People” event held during the “Abitare il Tempo 2009” international interior design exhibition at Verona. The installation at Verona revisits and reinterprets traditional Arab codes in a snapshot of the local culture that is a long way from traditional stereotypes. A fresh, dynamic look capable of standing the pace of the huge, ongoing changes in Saudi Arabia, which is currently enjoying a period of continuous albeit measured growth. An architectural idea, a natural bridge linking the past, present and future. The project for Linking People reproduces the mood of this new hotel. The starting point for the design is a flower pattern, the symbol of the Riyadh Gallery that was the inspiration for the installation. Every detail, material and decoration in the 100 m² exhibition space is the outcome of experimentation involving many leading companies in the international market.

Ventilated façades-thermal insulation and noise reduction-Vives Azulejos y Gres. The ventilated façades are a building

Ventilated façades-thermal insulation and noise reduction-Vives Azulejos y Gres.
The ventilated façades are a building solution that is becoming more and more extended thanks to its high quality and aesthetical characteristics. It presents several advantages as for example thermal insulation and noise reduction.
The use of a second skin façade creates a protection against atmospheric agents, as the wind, the sun, the rain, the snow, etc. This results in less wear on the façade and lower maintenance costs.
Vives Azulejos y Gres presents as suitable for ventilated façades its big size porcelain ranges in 45×90, 60×90 and 60×120.
A ventilated façade is a wall covering system that incorporates a ventilated cavity between the covering and the insulation. It is considered the most efficient system for insulating buildings as it eliminates unwanted heat bridges and condensation problems, resulting in excellent thermal-hygrometric behaviour.

Components of the system:

- Vertical profile attached to the support by cantilever fastenings.
- Mechanical holding clips.
- Wall panels.

In order to offer solutions for ventilated façades, Vives Azulejos y Gres works in collaboration with Mecanofas, which is a company that has been dedicated to the commercialisation and assembly of ventilated façades for more than ten years. The manager of this company is Carlos Sanchís, the real pioneer in the introduction of the ventilated façades and the main responsible in the Karrat S-7 fastening system promotion. Carlos has also been awarded with the Alfa de Oro, which is a prize presented in the most important fair in the ceramic sector: Cevisama.

Ceramics has become one of the main options when creating a second skin façade. It provides the building with a sophisticated and elegant image contributing to create more elegant and distinguished urban spaces.

Vives Azulejos y Gres ranges include some series, which, thanks to its size and resistance to bad weather conditions, are suitable for this type of use. Some of the most suitable sizes are: 45 x 90, 60 x 90 and 60 x 120.

In size 45×90 we can find series as KENION, y CARONTE. Both of them are elegant and frost resistant porcelain tiles.

On the other hand, we have the porcelain series HIDRA y LOIRE. HIDRA and LOIRE in size 60×90. HIDRA series has a high PEI so this is a very resistant tile front abrasion and erosion, as well as frost and slip resistant. LOIRE series presents a look that simulates the stone looking. Finally, the CONDOR series in 60×120 is a frost resistant and rectified porcelain tile with an elegant finish.

VIVES – Is becoming more common the use of ceramic in ventilated façades?

Carlos Sanchís – After several years of effort, nowadays the ceramic ventilated façades have been consolidated.

VIVES – Are the advantages of using this material in ventilated façades well known?

C.S. – There are some independent works by companies from this sector that have made a comparison between ceramic as floor tile and other alternative materials such as marble, limestone, granite, etc. In façades the range is wider, including materials as prefabricated concrete, plywood sheets, aluminium panels, etc. Moreover, there are needed essays to check the resistance front atmospheric factors and ultraviolet rays.

VIVES – Which system or ceramic size would you use considering safety, economy, etc.?

C.S. – The most suitable size for the visible or hidden clip system is the 45×90. The 60×120 and the 60×90 are the most recommended for the back fastening system, even though a horizontal substructure is needed.

VIVES – How does the ventilated façade system contribute to a sustainable construction of both new and renovated buildings?

C.S. – In general, ventilated façades provide the building with an excellent resistance front humidity and temperature, independently of the used material. Moreover, the ceramic ventilated façades, thanks to its lightness, allows the renovation of existing buildings, giving them a modern and durable looking.

VIVES – Which innovations can be presented in a ceramic ventilated façade construction?

C.S. – The innovations in ventilated façades take two clearly defined ways. The first of them is the research and development of chemical fastening system, considering that nowadays the ceramic tiles are becoming thinner which makes difficult the use of a mechanical fastening system. On the other hand, the second line is based in the additional characteristics such as the photovoltaic integration, protection against electromagnetic waves, etc.

VIVES – Which are the main characteristics of your ventilated façades system?

C.S. – Our fastening systems are basically characterised by their safety and fast installation, as well as the wide range of systems that we offer, which are adaptable to different tile sizes and thickness in order to optimize costs.

VIVES – Which are the stages to follow in a ventilated façade project?

C.S. – Basically the redesigning, the installation of cantilever fastenings and fastening edges, the vertical profiles installation, the isolation, the installation of horizontal profiles, if they are needed, and finally, the collocation of the porcelain tile.

VIVES – Which determining factors do we have to consider in a ventilated façade performance?

C.S. – Usually, the ventilated façades are only tested front wind conditions, event though the ventilated façade is also subjected to horizontal efforts, due to the wind, and to vertical efforts, due to its own weight. Regarding buildings, we have to add three factors: to study the state of the supports where we will fix the cantilever fastenings; to verify the overweight that is going to be added to the building, in the case of renovations; and finally, to confirm the forged edges setback. These forged edges project around 10 cm. from the façade. If the building does not have these setbacks, the forged edges will project more than the legal limits.

VIVES – How does DIT contribute to the collocation of a ventilated façade system?

Basically, safety. There are two kind of organisms that certify its proficiency in a building system, these are Instituto de Construcción Eduardo Torroja and Instituto de Tecnología de Cataluña (ITEC). The first of them certifies by way of the DIT: Technical Suitability Document, and the second through the DAU: Use Adequacy Document. Obtaining these documents is voluntary and what it is described on them is that the system itself will fulfil properly the requirements if it is applied according to the document. The lack of normative in this field is the reason why these documents exist. In case there was a normative, we should apply it and these documents would not have any validity.Vives Azulejos y Gres, S.A. Ctra.

Trademark “Ceramic Tiles of Italy”-Ceramica Fioranese.

It is no secret to the industry experts that Ceramica Fioranese products are genuinely 100% Italian.
Made in Italy: this is a veritable mission statement for Ceramica Fioranese. Our articles are devised, researched and developed, as well as tested and produced entirely in Italy. With no short cuts taken, in the conviction that the experience developed over decades by our manpower constitutes added value, in the certainty that every effort to advance our traditions will bring due acknowledgement.
This very trademark “Ceramic Tiles of Italy”, which very few enterprises currently operating in the Italian environment can boast, is the first acknowledgment. Clearly, praise is due to other enterprises who take different approaches to the production of ceramics which open them to other countries in Europe and the world. However we at Ceramica Fioranese are particularly proud to be Italian and to belong to that Italy which seeks to be Italian through and through, without compromise, with a passion enhanced by persistence. An Italy which produces, and which in so doing also honours the Europe of which it forms a part: an ideal that makes its presence felt, here too.

TAU launches the new format tiles 20 x 60 – TAU Ceramica, Spain. TAU grows

TAU launches the new format tiles 20 x 60 – TAU Ceramica, Spain.

TAU grows and evolves. The brand is currently launching new proposals in the innovative 20×60 format, a surprising, casual and versatile format which meets one of the present demands of consumers. It arrives with a wide ranging catalogue of proposals which includes all types of designs, finishes and effects, with the aim of covering the entire spectrum of needs for professionals and clients.

Fiber is dynamic, fresh and bold. Its red, wenge, blue, while and black colours make for a thousand and one combinations, all characterised by gentle, new flashes of gloss, which make it highly original. Its soft texture should also be taken into account. The whole represents a full and well-crafted harmony.

Point is a single colour proposal which stands out for the circles which form the model. Personal, lively and always changing, thanks to its numerous decorations and infinite combinations, Point is specially designed for those who wish to project their personality onto the rooms, interact with the space to make it unique and exclusive, in the form of mosaics or panels.

Point is minimalist, highly architectural and structural, and rabidly modern. Its finishes in black, grey, brown, beige and white produces an absolutely innovative result, an effect boosted by the decorations given to this model, whose circles break up the geometric interplay of the bases, largely as a result of the orange, blue, grey, pistachio and brown tones in its design. It also has mosaics in metallic, blue, green, orange and mother-of-pearl finishes in one of the most complete and personal ranges of TAU for the new season. Point perfectly combines with the wide range of single colour proposals of the Colore pavement.

Standing at the opposite end of this aesthetic line is the TAU Luminia collection, comprising the Alenda-Beires and Massa-Samaná models and Arun, three ideas which emphasise sobriety, sophistication and exclusiveness.

TAU Luminia is inspired by the classic marbles which has had a successful reception in the market and continues to grow with new creations. With a perfect finish and true to the original material which inspires them, Alenda-Beires and Massa-Samaná are two baroque decorative proposals for deluxe, refined, sophisticated ambiences… Designed for the most exclusive international markets, Alenda-Beires perfectly reproduces the splendour of emperor marble, one of the most noble and ancient materials in history. Massa-Samaná is directly inspired on portoro marble.

Lastly, Arun is a model resembling the winding waves of the desert. Inspired on the stone used to build some of the most striking Thai temples, Arun transmits warmth and relaxation. This model makes maximum use of the advantages of digital decoration, multiplying the end result.

Nu_Travertine-authentic look of stone that has just left the quarry by Ceramica Fioranese.

Ceramica Fioranese has been steadily developing its know how in digital technology since 2002, and its expertise is acknowledged by those in the industry. Nu_Travertine – the latest addition to the family, is the outcome of this ongoing process of evolution in design – and was immediately judged as being a genuinely beautiful stone, with the authentic look of stone that has just left the quarry.
The intention of the patent is to record the twenty one faces of our Nu_Travertine, both on the flat and in 3D, making this a truly unique design developed and manufactured with digital pigment technology.
But that’s not all: Nu_Travertine is certified for having over 42.5% content of recycled materials meeting the requirements of environmental compatibility stipulated in the strictest standards. Once again, Ceramica Fioranese products see beauty and ecology going hand in hand; the design patent for Nu_Travertine is the official seal of recognition of the efforts of our research.
